Bad: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can make you sleepy, but it can have after effects. Studies show that using too much of it can lessen your responses similar to drinking alcohol. Is it okay to mix ambien and benadyrl to treat insomnia? I took benadryl (diphenhydramine) around 4hrs after taking ambien bc it didn't work, are there side effects?
No don't mix drugs: Please don't mix ambien with benadryl (diphenhydramine). I would first suggest you speak with your doctor who prescribed you ambien and him/her that you are still experiencing insomnia. Mixing prescription medication with drugs like benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be dangerous. Perhaps you should improve your sleep hygiene first. Sleep same time every night, bed is used only for sleep, cool dark room, no distractions (TV) etc. ...Read more

I take Allegra (fexofenadine) (180mg) each night before bed for allergies. Can I also safely take a sleep aid like ZzQuil (diphenhydramine) for occasional insomnia?
If diphenhydramine is a sleeping pill and an antihistamine, then why is it safe to take daily for allergy but not when insomnia is the issue?
Good question.: As long as you don't exceed the dose or frequency on the label - they are equally risky/safe. Perhaps the concern more with insomnia than allergy is that sleep is a combo of physical and behavioral causes while allergy is considered all physical. So, some may think you should 1st try good sleep habits/hygiene before pills. Also they may fear dependence more w/ insomnia. Sharp thinking! ...Read more
