Don't think so: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) usually is taken every 6 hours. It generally lasts 6-8 hours. Other factors include how big a dose was taken, and how many hives are coming out on the skin. For example, having large numbers of hives continuing to appear may mean a need for a bigger dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine) plus adding other medications. ...Read more

If I was allegic to shrimp as a kid can I try it now as a adult and see if I out grew it. And if I get hives can I use benadryl (diphenhydramine)?

Shell fish allergy: Do not treat your allergy carelessly. If you want to test it then go to a qualified allergist. Take your shrimp along (no touching of course) and you are the doctor can have lunch. If you react you will need epinephrine, oxygen, and then Benedryl to recover. If you don't react you and your doctor enjoyed lunch. Some doctors may not want you to try due to the risk. Get an epipen too. ...Read more

Hives: Hives can be itchy and painful. I always worry if patients start to have trouble breathing. If this is happening, please go to the emergency room now! Otherwise, tylenol (acetaminophen) 1000mg 3x daily and Benadryl 50mg 3x daily can be very helpful. Please seek medical care, if these hives last another 2 days. Feel better! ...Read more

I have had an allergic reaction to Bactrim, I currently have hives from head to toe, literally. What dose of benadryl can I take?

Depends: Benadryl is sedating and interacts with alcohol and other sedating meds. 25mg is usually a good starting point. Always read and follow the directions provided with any otc medication. Also recommend a long-acting medication such as cetirizine for sustained effect when treating new hives) Notify the treating physician and, if hives occur in other circumstances, see an Allergist. ...Read more

I took an dose of NyQuil. Within a few minutes I had hives and redness on my forehead, nose, and chin. I took a Benadryl for the rash. Am I safe?

I took an dose of NyQuil. Within a few minutes I had hives and redness on my forehead, nose, and chin. I took a Benadryl for the rash. Am I safe?

Yes: NyQuil is more likely to induce isolated cutaneous hives than a full blown anaphylactic drug reaction. If symptoms isolated to skin itching (no swelling, dizziness, heart palpitations, wheezing, nausea, coughing) and if they resolve with Benadryl, then nothing to worry about ...Read more

I'm having hives and took 50 mg Benadryl (diphenhydramine) and didn't help. Should I take another 25 mg?

Try long-acting AH: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) seldom works on hives, in my experience; another 25mg will just make you sleepy, if you aren't already. Try one of the long-acting antihistamines like Allegra or Claritin, both of which are available OTC now. Hives can be difficult to treat, though; if that doesn't work, you'll need to see your doctor or a dermatologist, who will try to determine what is causing them. ...Read more

No: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is just a short acting antihistamine that will help the hives and itching only for a short period of time., maybe a few hours. Longer acting antihistamines like Zyrtec or Allegra will help, but you might need more than one per day. You should see an allergist for further evaluation and management, especially if hives continue despite antihistamine therapy ...Read more
