Yes: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will help you sleep and help with excess mucus production. There should be no problem taking these two medications together. ...Read more
Check with doc: Both cause sleepiness so combined makes even more so. Both can hurt you if you take too much, alone or together. It also depends on what other meds, drugs/alcohol, caffeine, you're taking & why you need the med in the first place. Good sleep is often obtained through good habits, and enough daily exercise & proper diet, to ensure a sound sleep. I bet a lot of marathon runners were ex-insomniacs! ...Read more
OVER SEDATION: All three Meds cause sedation. Try to space out dosages. Zyrtec& Allegra (fexofenadine) are better for allergies and less sedating. Follow up with your prescribing doctor, if pain is worsening causing insomnia, you may need Meds adjustment. IE gabapentin at bedtime. Or long acting narcotics like Fentanyl patch. ...Read more

Should be ok if...: If a person had no problems taking meloxicam (Mobic) in the past for some medical condition, and separately had no problem taking diphenhydramine (Benadryl) in the past, then she should be ok taking the medications at the same time. If worried, she can ask her doctor who prescribed the meloxicam. Benadryl does cause drowsiness, so can be unsafe for certain activities such as driving or piloting. ...Read more

Yes: Most antihistamines are dosed at levels much below the toxic levels. Claritin was initially tested in drug studies at 4 times the current recommended dose. These same studies found that 10 mg yielded nearly equvalent effects as 40 mg. Since there is not a dramatic dose effect, increasing to higher levels rarely improves nasal symptoms. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may have drying effects but sedation limits the dose. ...Read more

Yep!: They are both antihistamines, with a difference. Benedryl is sedating, has to be taken 3-4 times a day, and may need to be reserved for bedtime dosing. Claritin (loratadine) is a once-a-day, nonsedating antihistamine, and can be taken any time of day. One common technique for using combination antihistamines for severe symptoms would be morning Claritin (loratadine) and bedtime benedryl. ...Read more
I agree w dr. Labarbera. Although they can be used together - don't really recommend it. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can lead to rebound insomnia. How about starting w good sleep hygiene. 1. Keep a regular bedtime & wakening time (to include weekends). Get up the same time each day, regardless of what time you fell asleep.
2. Make a regular, relaxing bedtime routine. Relaxing rituals prior to bedtime may include. ...Read more
Depends: They are both in the same family (antihistamines), but a few people have daytime symptoms so take non-sedating med (like loratadine) and its effect wears off before next day's dose, so take a sedating (/older) antihistamine (like benadryl) at bedtime for continued relief and to aid with sleep. If no heart / urinary / blood pressure issues and no other meds to conflict with, not likely a problem. ...Read more
