Lunesta (eszopiclone): Lunesta (eszopiclone) is by far the safest of the three. Ambien causes too much sleep-eating, sleep-walking, sleep talking, and even sleep driving. I have not seen any of this with lunesta (eszopiclone). Silenor is horrifically expensive for an old generic drug in low doses and is probably the closest in effect to benadryl. I don't know of anyone that has switched into mania on it, but it is a theoretical possibility. ...Read more

Yes-with chronic use: Good question. The "z drugs" disrupt sleep less than benzodiazepines but there is evidence that there is some disruption with chronic use that becomes a big problem when people try to stop taking these drugs.
