Many possibilities: You have to think about external as well as internal causes. Has there been any external trauma to the area in sports, playing, etc? Thinking of internal issues, is there a history of constipation, lactose intolerance, inflammatory bowel disease? Very Unlikely: If your son had an umbilical (belly button) hernia, there would be a bump at the belly button that was soft and squishy. These do not commonly cause pain. Seek a 2nd opinion: I do not know what "keyhole surgery" is. I assume you had your surgery laparoscopically meaning without a large incision.
