Palsy (Definition)

...is a corruption of French "paralise" from Latinized Greek "paralysis." In the old days it meant any kind of persistent weakness. To this day Parkinson's disease is also called "paralysis agitans" which is a Latin translation of Dr. Parkinson's original name for it, the "shaking palsy." We've obviously reborrowed the full form "paralysis" into English as well; today ...Read more

I placed an an elastic headband over my eyes for Bell's palsy to sleep. Woke up with very blurry eyes. Bell's palsy side still very blurry. Normal?

No: No the eye being blurry is not normal and if your blurriness does not improve you need to see an opthalmologist asap to ensure you did not cause a corneal or other eye structures injury by the elastic headband. Bell's palsy does not cause vision issues. ...Read more

My left eye twitches fiercely of late. I have had bells palsy twice on that side, once about a year ago. Does this mean I am getting it again?

My left eye twitches fiercely of late. I have had bells palsy twice on that side, once about a year ago. Does this mean I am getting it again?

Get checked: Recurrent bell's palsy is not common so it is possible there is another reason for facial paralysis and now "blepharospasm". I am not sure if you had an MRI at any point to make sure there isn't something else going on inside your brain area but if not i would do so asap. I would see an ENT or a neurologist who can get to the bottom of what is going on. ...Read more

4 yrs ago i was diagnosed with bells palsy on the right side of my face. Now the left side of my forehead above my left eye is twitching. Why?

Cause may be unknown: Twitching inside a facial muscle, which happens in normal people, is called myokymia (an involuntary, spontaneous, quivering of a few muscle cell bundles in a muscle). Myokymia starts and stops spontaneously. It can last a few minutes to a few days. One should see her primary care doctor, or an eye/ear/neurology doctor, if symptoms persist, keep recurring, or are combined with any other symptoms. ...Read more

8months ago i had bells palsy in right side & numbed left side, after recovery got pain behind left eye. now still have the eye pain & got blood spot i?

SOME THOTS: Bilateral issues suggest that this is NOT just simple Bell's palsy, and instead may represent a different process. Eye pain with a blind spot raises questions of an optic nerve inflammation. Suggest visit to neurologist, as several different explanations may need to be considered. I would test for sarcoid, MS, vasculitis like lupus, etc. We might be able to help further via Concierge service. ...Read more

Got Bells palsy a few months ago. My smile is back and able to close eye but I can't produce tears in eye and lack of saliva in mouth. Is it permanent?

Got Bells palsy a few months ago. My smile is back and able to close eye but I can't produce tears in eye and lack of saliva in mouth. Is it permanent?

Only time will tell: Pretty unsatisfactory answer I know but it's the truth. Some people say after a 2-3 mths, WYSIWYG...(you're young; you know what that means don't you?). I have seen people improve after Bell's over the course of 1-2 years or longer. So, I stopped predicting these things a while back. The young whipper snapper docs think they know but you may prove them wrong. Hang in there & be patient! ...Read more
