Push ups and other exercises to strengthen his body should help reduce injury. Yr ago had a contusion/huge baseball size hematoma on back of hand and first two fingers, should it still get sore & hurt at times if I do a lot?
Ice/heat/more rest: If your arm is hurting the night before a game, you may want to consider not throwing the next day, as the pain is your body's way of telling you to real it in a bit and let the body heal. In fact, if you are having pain on the morning of the game, i highly suggest not throwing until you are completely pain free, or else you may make matters worse.
