Dr. Michael E. Ein answered:

What does "minimal basal subsegmental atelectasis" mean and is it life threatening?

NO

Atelectasis
FAILURE TO BREATH DEEPLY FOR VARIOUS REASONS SUCH AS PAIN IN A POST OPERATIVE PATIENT CAN CAUSE COLLAPSE OF SMALL AREAS OF THE LUNGS. THIS USUALLY OCCURS AT THE BOTTOM OR BASES OF THE LUNGS WHICH IS MINIMAL BASAL SUBSEGMENTAL ATELECTASIS. USING AN INCENTIVE SPIROMETER WILL RESOLVE THIS MINOR CONDITION. IT IS NOT LIFE THREATENING IN ANY WAY.

What is bibasal atelectasis?

Lung base atelectasi

Atelectasis
Bibasilar atelectasis typically refers to linear (subsegmental) atelectasis at the lung bases. This is typically seen with inadequate inspiration at the time of radiologic studies. It may be a result of prior infection or surgery. Uncommonly it may be caused by bronchial obstruction from mucus or adjacent lymph nodes or other tissue. It depends on the degree of atelectasis but typically is benign.

what is left lingular atelectasis?

Ligula

Atelectasis
The ligula is the equivalent of the middle lobe of the lung on the left-hand side. There is no true middle lobe but it is an area of the left lung. Atelectasis refers to an area of the lung where there is no good gas exchange due to either obstruction or filling in with fluid. This is often seen with an infection.

What is lingular subsegmental atelectasis?

Partial Collapse

Atelectasis
The lingula is the lower anterior (Front) portion of the left upper lobe of the lung that corresponds to the right middle lobe. Atelectasis is collapse of a portion of the lung. So, subsegmental atelectasis means that portions of lung segments of the lingula are incompletely aerated. May indicate bronchial blockage, poor breathing, or even early infection.
