24 years old? What type of cardiomyopathy? Postpartum? If this is the case, there is a chance you heart function can still get better.

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

I'm sick and I have a fever, sore throat, barking cough, and a head ache. Will OTC meds work for this?
Depends...: If the fever is low-grade, then you probably have a virus which will run its course in a few days to week. In that case, symptom control is the treatment and some otc meds can help. On the other hand, if your fever is higher, you likely have a bacterial infection which will respond to antibiotics. See your doctor for specific diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

Sinus and throat felt funny and now gone and have a very croupy cough. Is this a viral infection?
My daughter is 5 months, she has had a croupy cough for a few days, and now I have a sore throat. Is it contagious?
Coughing: Coughing without producing phlegm is likely related to a viral infection of the lower windpipe. Rattling sounds are due to areas where thick mucus is coating the walls of the airway. Supporting the immune system and monitoring for progression to a bacterial infection or pneumonia will serve you well. Keep your lungs active and cough out what comes up easily. Seek eval if worsening. ...Read more

Dr. Can check throat: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin can help decrease throat pain. ...Read more
Have a pain under my left shoulder blade that hurts when I cough or clear throat. The pain radiates down arm with little finger tingling?
Pinched nerve: Because patients having cardiac problems can have these symptoms, you should have this ruled out. But the most common cause is an irritation of a nerve in the neck by a bone spur or herniation that can cause pain or numbness that runs down the arm into the hand. An MRI can usually show the cause of the problem if it does not resolve. Thank you for the question. ...Read more
My 17 year old daughter has barking cough, throat is swollen, headache and dizziness. Chest pain when coughing, Temp 99.9° what should I do??
Maybe: Just playing the odds, he probably has a cold or a mild case of croup. But if there's a question of his safety in your mind, then better safe than sorry. Here's some basic guidelines I use: if he's having trouble breathing (not just coughing), if he's refusing to drink, not urinating, in pain, inconsolably irritable or barely responsive, he definitely needs to be seen. Beyond that, it's your judgement. ...Read more
Antihistamines: The most common reason for having a throat tickle is allergy. You may or may not have runny/itchy eyes & nose with sneezing; but it is worth a try. Daily, non-sedating claritin, (loratadine) zyrtec, or Allegra should do the trick. This may be a seasonal thing, or may be year round. If it is more of a constant thing, then switch your daily antihistamine every 2-3 months to maintain the effect. ...Read more

My 5 year old son has a barking cough and is vomitting. Is this just a virus or should I take him to the peds tomorrow? No fever.
Maybe croup: The characteristic cough of croup is barking of a dog or seal. It is often caused by parainfluenza viruses. Coughing can be quite bothersome and many children have post-tussive emesis (vomiiting from coughing). Try some cough syrup. Such as robitussin (guaifenesin). If not adequate, he may need to see doc for eval and treatment such as albuterol/steroid/ and stronger cough meds etc...Good luck. ...Read more

No cough med: That bark cough is not from the lungs but from airway irritation and swelling right below the vocal cords in her trachea. Likely irritated from breathing tube she had in during the surgery. COUGH MEDS WON'T HELP! Do excessive amounts of humidity...take her in shower, run humidifier, boil water on your stove, go to a tropical rain forrest. Anything to increase humidity in the air she's breathing ...Read more
