What is the difference between a barium enema and a virtual colonoscopy?

CT colonoscopy: is a CT scan with specific technical parameters. There is a bowel prep to clear out the colon, and a tube is placed into the rectum to fill the colon with air. A barium enema uses x-ray/fluoroscopy instead of CT. With a rectal tube, the colon is filled with barium and air, and the patient placed in different positions for viewing. I am having a barium enema done and they told me to use a water enema. I have saline. Is this ok to use?

Saline is good...: Not too many people stock saline at home, but if you have it at home, it is ok to use with your enema. Saline is basically water +salt+chloride in concentration slightly higher than your plasma (blood fluid without the red/white cells). It is probably a safer enema to use then water, but the difference is likely not significant. Good luck with your procedure. ...Read more

When you get a barium enema, how long or round is piece that is inserted into rectum? I am nervous about the whole procedure!

Not Big: I've been the inserter and the insertee. The tip is about as thick as an index finger with a mild area of widening about an inch from the end of the tip. A small balloon may be inflated after the tip is inserted (with lots of lubricant). The balloon helps you keep the enema from leaking out. Only a few inches of the tip will get inserted. Try not to get too worked up. The prep is a bigger deal. ...Read more
