What is good LDL and hdl?

What is good LDL and hdl?

Low LDL, high HDL: Lowest LDL ('lousy') cholesterol and highest HDL ('healthy') cholesterol are the best to have. A LDL as low as 60-70 mg/dl and a HDL higher than 50-60 mg/dl are ideal. ...Read more

Bad Cholesterol (Definition)

Cholesterol is a very specific fat molecule made by every animal cell on the planet, part of every animal cell membrane, enables membrane flexibility, cells to change shape, animals to move. Look it up ("cholesterol molecule" works best) on google images. Additionally, for most people hi-chol foods ↓ measured LDL particles while low-chol foods ↑ldl ; drive artery ...Read more

Risk of heart: Disease. Hdl should be higher than 40, LDL should be less than 130, and triglycerides below 150. See this site for more info. http://my.clevelandclinic.org/heart/diagnostics-testing/laboratory-tests/lipid-blood-tests.aspx. ...Read more

Tryglicerides and hdl are good but ldl is high. Advice?

Tryglicerides and hdl are good but ldl is high. Advice?

More info please: Depends on how high your LDL is. Also depends on your risk factors and your diet. LDL can be lowered by increasing your omega fatty acid, by increasing your exercise and possibly by decreasing your carbohydrate intake. If you have low risk factors then there wouldn't be much cause for concern. ...Read more

Why is low HDL cholesterol bad for you?

Why is low HDL cholesterol bad for you?

Complicated: The conventional wisdom is that HDL helps to remove cholesterol from your arteries and epidemiological studies clearly show that the lower the hdl, the higher the risk and vice versa but drugs that raise the HDL have had disappointing results making the conventional wisdom suspect. It may just be a marker for something else. Bottom line: we're not sure why but it is. ...Read more

What are good levels of HDL cholesterol?

Dr. Irv Loh Dr. Loh
3 doctors agreed:

Higher the better: Epidemiologically, the higher the hdl-c, the better, with notably reduced risk with hdl-c in excess of 60 mg/dl. The problem is that this is often genetically and gender dependent, & there is scant evidence that raising hdl-c per se (independent of triglycerides and ldl-c) by drugs will change clinical outcomes. We have new agents in trials that significantly raise hdl-c & may improve outcomes. ...Read more

Yes, does having a lipid panel of total cholesterol 227, HDL 76, Triglycerides 79 and LDl 135 constitute having a bad heart? Are these bad results?

That's pretty good.: While your LDL could afford to be a bit lower (< 100 to be really good), your HDL is really high, which is very heart-protective, and your triglycerides are in an acceptable range. Your total is high in part because your HDL is so high, which is a good thing. But again, the LDL could afford to be a bit lower. ...Read more

Whats best high density lipoprotein cholesterol range?

Higher the better: Acceptable hdl-c traditionally has a lower level in men of 40 mg/dl and 50 mg/dl in women. But generally, the higher the better. The problem is that our current therapies (lifestyle and drugs) have minimal to modest impact on raising hdl-c. Future agents may be more effective, but the proof of improved outcome will be needed. Plus, all hdl-c may not be alike, some more functional than others. ...Read more

What is good cholesterol & what is bad cholesterol?

What is good cholesterol & what is bad cholesterol?

Cholesterol: Cholesterol has multiple components. The high density component is called 'good' and the low density component is called 'bad'. This is because high levels of HDL are somewhat associated with less vascular disease and high levels of LDL are associated with worse vascular disease. ...Read more

Had VAP chol. test overall num high, but ratios good LDL pattern A/B. Prim. DR encouraging statin. 43yr old male calcium score 0. Is statin neces.?

Depends on risks: Groups have different recommendations, which change. For >40yr w known atherosclerotic disease, kidney disease, diabetes,or >20% 10 year risk for MI (search "Framingham risk score calculator"), generally get statins.Low risk coronary artery calcium score can allow recalculation of risk score. Your doctor knows you better than we do; doing the risk score calculator & discussing at next appt worthwhile ...Read more

Is low HDL as much a cardiovascular risk as high ldl? Does HDL numbers really matter if LDL is under control? Lots of conflicting info out there.

Is low HDL as much a cardiovascular risk as high ldl? Does HDL numbers really matter if LDL is under control? Lots of conflicting info out there.

Agreed: Yes, lots of conflicting material. Right now, it seems that high ldl, especially LDL particle number is high can be a culprit - get a more sophisticated blood test than a "calculated ldl." you can have a normal LDL at 99, but the particle number may be 1800 which is high. Hdl should be over 40, but many people genetically have them in the 20's. ...Read more

Is low HDL as much a cardiovascular risk as high ldl? Does HDL numbers really matter if LDL is under control? Lots of conflicting info out there.

Bottom line is: You want your HDL as high as possible and LDL as low as possible. In women, low HDL is an independent risk factor for premature heart disease regardless of ldl. So both are important. ...Read more

My lipid profile shows s.Cholesterol=239, hdl=28, s.Triglycerides=345, ldl=162 and vldl=47. What does this mean?

My lipid profile shows s.Cholesterol=239, hdl=28, s.Triglycerides=345, ldl=162 and vldl=47. What does this mean?

Particle Problems: This lipid panel is common and often hides a greater problem. As tg rises the number of LDL particles rises. However, when tg is high the amount of cholesterol carried by LDL particles goes down. This often results in a much higher LDL particle number (ldl-p) than measured ldl-c levels. When ldl-p is high cardiovascular risk is high independent of ldl-c, hdl-c, or tg values. Ldl-p <1000 is ideal. ...Read more
