Fine for now: This is a standard treatment that is well studied. There is no evidence that it hurts a human infant in early pregnancy. We do not use it toward the end of pregnancy near the time of birth. (it can interfere with the clearance of bilirubin in the newborn period after the cord is clamped and mothers system is not cleanin babies blood of waste products) ...Read more

I have a UTI but I'm allergic to Motrin, can I still take Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS?

Generally, yes: I'm not known of motrin and Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) cross- sensitivity, your Doctor did prescribe it anyways, and should be safe, any serious reaction would appear in the first hour after the first pill, go to any ER/Urgent care waiting area and have the first dose, wait for an hour, if no reaction go home and continue the rest of your treatment, if any reaction occurs, you are in the very place you want to be ...Read more

Can you take uristat while on the antibiotic Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS for a UTI?

Here are some...: Yes, you may use it but is usually not necessary since Bactrim-DS would take its effect within one to three days if bacteria is sensitive to it. Generally speaking, nowadays, the use of medication has been excessive and most of them are practically a necessary. ...Read more

I was prescribed Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS for 10 days for a UTI...is this safe to take with accutane? I am currently on 40 mg a day and my derm is not in until Mon

Accutane and Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim): I don't know of any drug interactions here: I checked the literature for you (PubMed) as well as used a pharmaceutical tool searching for drug interactions - none were reported. This makes sense since Accutane is a vitamin A analogue and likely works independently of this antibiotic. Good idea to check with your Derm doc. Not sure TEN DAYS is needed for a UTI though - I would question your Primary ...Read more

I feel I have a UTI (burning when I urinate, tired) I have an old Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS prescription dated 7/3/12. Is it safe to take?

I feel I have a UTI (burning when I urinate, tired) I have an old Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS prescription dated 7/3/12. Is it safe to take?

Probably: First thing is that it's worth it to go get a urinalysis and culture. That way your doctor will know what bacteria it is, and whether it is sensitive to bacterium.

Regarding your prescription, check the bottle to see if you can find an expiration date. Most meds have a couple of years of shelf life. But it's best to check to make sure the exp date is ok. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is pretty cheap. ...Read more

I have a UTI. Only symptoms is blood in urine...just took 3rd dose of Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS. Still seeing blood in urine. History of utis and double kidney 36/F. How long should I wait to see results?

See answer below: Visible blood in the urine (aka gross hematuria) related to a UTI (aka hemorrhagic cystitis) is most often accompanied with other bladder symptoms (urinary urgency, frequency, burning and discomfort) and usually subsides within 24-72 hours IF on the correct antibiotic. Painless hematuria is a red flag and is often related to other causes and deserves further evaluation, even if it is self-limiting ...Read more

HC of pyelonephritis: When you are told that the urine test was - it just means it did not grow on the culture media that they chose to grow on. Try taking Ellura, a cranberry extract which prevents the bacteria from attaching to your bladder wall. It's not an antibiotic but it works quite well. ...Read more

Can bactrim treat gonnorhea? Was prescribed for UTI but also tested possitive for gonnorhea.

Can bactrim treat gonnorhea? Was prescribed for UTI but also tested possitive for gonnorhea.

Gonorrhea treatment: Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim®) is not recommended or reliable against gonorrhea. It might work but is dangerously risky; you need proper gonorrhea treatment with an injection of ceftriaxone plus either azithromycin or doxycycline. Contact your doctor immediately to arrange treatment. Also make sure all recent (1-2 mo.) sex partners are tested and treated. Good luck! ...Read more

Resistant germs: If you are not getting better from these antibiotics, I would worry about the germ being 'resistant'. This is an increasingly common problem these days- for multiple reasons... I would DEFINITELY check back with the doc who ordered the medication-hopefully they did a urinary culture, which would serve as a guide to the best therapy. You should be better by now. I would drink LOTS of water too ...Read more

How effective are bactrim or cipro (ciprofloxacin) for a UTI?

How effective are bactrim or cipro (ciprofloxacin) for a UTI?

Effective antibiotic: It depends on what organism is causing your urinary tract infection (uti). The best way to find out what antibiotic is effective is to go to your physician and have a culture and sensitivity (c&s) ordered on your urine. Once the c&s is returned, you can tell if you're on the proper antibiotic, or need another one to successfully treat it. ...Read more

I always used to take cipro (ciprofloxacin) for recurrent UTI but became resistant to it. This time I was prescribed bactrim. Will it work this time?

A good chance...: Like any other antibiotic, frequent use will create resistance and become ineffective. If you have not used that before, the chance of it working is good. If not, there are still other options. Work with your doc to get some info on preventive measures to minimize recurrence and reduce need for antibiotic use. Good luck. ...Read more

UTI in May. Got Cipro. In July got Bactrim. Symptoms still persisted. Cipro in September. Still painful. Uro DR said its normal. Nauseous all day.

Needs Investigations: Recurrent urinary tract infections require investigations to determine if there is an etiology predisposing for infections. Also, you need urine culture to determine the causing organism and directing antibiotics based on the sensitivity of the organism. ...Read more

I have a full prescription for Bactrim and I wanted to know if I could take it for my UTI and URI?

I have a full prescription for Bactrim and I wanted to know if I could take it for my UTI and URI?

Maybe, maybe not: Your question is unclear. If prescribed by a health professional for either of these conditions, take it as directed. If not, contact a doctor for personal advice. Bactrim is often used and effective for UTI, but no antibiotic is likely to help a URI, which probably is a viral infection. (Viral infections are not helped by antibiotics.) ...Read more

I am taking buproprion xl, and I should not take cipro (ciprofloxacin). I have a uti, and in the past only cipro (ciprofloxacin) cleared it up (bactrim ineffective). What can I take?

Not contraindicated: Cipro (ciprofloxacin) is not contraindicated in people taking bupropion. The recommendation is to 'use caution' because of an increased risk of seizures, but if you don't already have a seizure disorder, that's unlikely to be a problem. Talk to your doctor. ...Read more

I'm allergic to Bactrim (hives), cipro, (ciprofloxacin) and now mayb possibly nitrofuratoin. What else can u take for uti?

Other antibiotics: Depends on the bacteria that you have got, your doctor can prescribe other antibiotics, hopefully won't cause you an allergic reaction, if an antibiotic is badly needed and no other alternative is available, you can still have it in consultation with an allergist for a process called desensitization, but that's rarely resorted to, good luck ...Read more

How long do the pain last with a UTI while taken bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) been taking the meds for 4 days now.?

Depends: Typically I would expect that your pain and infection should be cleared by now unless you have risk factors to make them last longer. Your infection might be resistant to the medication and you should contact your physician to have a further evaluation. ...Read more

Given bactrim for uti and fluconazol for yeast infection. Yeast infection discharge has worsened to a greenish hue. Should I stop taking bactrim?

Return to doctor: Yeast usually causes little or no discharge, and usually white, not colored. I'm concerned something else is causing it. STDs like gonorrhea, chlamydia or trichomonas may be more likely and also can cause UTI-like symptoms. Recheck with the doctor or clinic where you are being treated. Good luck! ...Read more
