What are the side effects of smz/tmp ds generic for bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds and asmanex twisthaler. Thank you ?
Usually none, but...: Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) (smz/tmp) is a sulfa antibiotic that can sometimes cause allergic drug reactions on the skin, such as red rashes, hives, or occasionally worse. Stomach upset, with or without diarrhea, can happen with any antibiotic. Asmanex is an inhaled powder, so can cause a cough in a few people very sensitive to the powder. Asmanex is a steroid, so may cause oral thrush if one doesn't rinse and spit. ...Read more
I have a sinus infection and just started Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS yesterday. I've been reading all the negative reviews. Worried about side effects. Is Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ok?
Usually no problem: It indeed can be alarming to read lists of drug side effects. But for Bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) most of them are rare and few are permanent or dangerous. The vast majority of people who take it have no probem at all. And your doctor wouldn't have prescribed it unless she believed it would be more helpful than harmful. But recheck with the doctor if you remain concerned. ...Read more
Took Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) DS twice a day for two weeks. Two weeks later side effects of brain fog, body aches and anxiet continue. How long can these effects last?
Doubtful from meds: Your history of anxiety may be provoking your ongoing feelings of "brain fog" more than the residual effects of the antibiotic. If that had anything to do with things in the first place it should've easily cleared by now. See your doctor for more evaluation if necessary. ...Read more

How common are serious side effects with the drug Bactrim? Is this drug safer than Cipro (ciprofloxacin)? I'm taking it for a prostate infection.
Prostate infection: Assuming your doc didn't have lab data demonstrating bacteria & antibiotic resistance (commonly referred to as culture & sensitivity), Cipro (ciprofloxacin)floxacin is better than Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole at getting into the prostate. All quinolones like Cipro (ciprofloxacin) carry a Black Box warning against tendonitis & tendon rupture, which while rare, is more common in elderly patients. I've taken Bactrim for 8 days with no obvious side effects but now I have hives and I've had a swollen lymph node on my left side of my neck and I have been having periodic nerve pain. Please, any suggestions would be great.
Allergic reaction.: An allergic reaction to a drug may take several days to appear. If you are taking no other new meds, then you likely are allergic to Bactrim. Call the prescribing doctor. Take 25-50 mg Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) (after reading label to be sure it is something you can take safely). If you have trouble breathing, swallowing, or chest pain, go to an ER right away. ...Read more
Which medication has least side effects Bactrim or cipro (ciprofloxacin)? I am a seizure risk and taking cymbalta. I need something for a UTI.
In general, Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim): would be used before Cipro (ciprofloxacin) for Bladder infections. Both are tolerated well, but Bactrim is easier on the kidney. However in Males, the risk of a bladder infection is actually lower than that of a prostate infection and Cipro (ciprofloxacin) in that case is preferred. Neither of these will cover ANY STDs-note symptoms are very similar. Your Doctor will decide depending on your symptoms ,tests and Cultures. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with a uti ... no symptoms. I was prescribed nitrofurantoin and bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim). Both bad side effects. Can I do something without taking meds?
Call your doctor: The most common side effect of these drugs is allergic skin rash, especially with Bactrim; I would be suspicious that any other symptoms are not actual drug side effects. But even 2-3 days treatment sometimes is enough for UTI. If you need additional Rx and truly cannot tolerate either of these drugs, several other antibiotics would work. Contact your doctor and follow his or her advice about it. ...Read more

Will this medication hurt my baby? Ok so im 99% positive im pregnant and yesterday i went to the doctor for a UTI and they gave me bactrim ds 800-160 tablets for 10 days. I was wondering if this will hurt my baby because its only been a couple weeks since
Fine for now: This is a standard treatment that is well studied. There is no evidence that it hurts a human infant in early pregnancy. See answer: The half-life of a drug is the time it takes for a drug to lose half (50%) of its pharmacologic or physiologic properties. The half-life of the two drug ingredients in Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) are 8 and 10 hrs. Unclear: It is hard to tie these things together. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) can occasionally lower platelet counts which would make it easier to bruise. But if there is just one bruise and you are off the medication you might watch and see. If you continue to have bruising problems, have any bleeding, or are still concerned then see your doctor. ...Read more
