Bactrim Drug Interactions
Have a 17-year-old taking Bactrim sulfamethoxazole tmp wondering if there will be any drug interaction if she takes an herbal allergy pill that I got at the health food center that has vitamin A , C, pantothenic acid , calcium , zinc, quercetin, n-acety
Probably OK, but...: I doubt there is any serious potential for an adverse interaction. However, one of the problems with "natural" medicines, herbal products, and nutritional supplements, etc is that their exact contents often are unknown, And even when known, there is little research on interations with other drugs. So hard to be certain -- but probably no problem. ...Read more
I was just diagnosed with ca-mrsa and i'm scared since it is often resistant to drugs. I just started bactrim ds tonight. What are the chances of it not responding to any drug? How can you know if it's caught early enough? Thank you!
Partially resistant: Ca MRSA is not particularly worse than having regular staph infection. It is not related to the flesh eating bacteria scare. The choice of antibiotics is limited, but generally the infection is sensitive to at least a few of the mainstream antibiotics of which Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is one. If your doctor thought you were at great risk you would not be at home. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Switching antibiotics from bactrim to Cipro (cipro (ciprofloxacin)floxacin). Bactrim stopped last night/taken for 5 days. Is it ok to start cipro (ciprofloxacin) today or are there any interactions?
It is ok: You didn't say what you were taking the antibiotics for- I am assuming urinary tract infection? Also, I am assuming a medical provider told you to switch and start cipro (ciprofloxacin). If so - there are no significant interactions (as long as you're not allergic). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Very allergic to sulfa drugs, took 1 Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) 800 in error. What should I do?
Antihistamine helps: In such a situation, one can take antihistamines such as Benadryl, (diphenhydramine) Claritin, Allegra, or Zyrtec (all over-the-counter) and call her primary care doctor. What the doctor might do will likely depend on the type of reaction the patient has had in the past, how severe the reaction was, how fast the reaction happened, etc... Immediate, severe allergic reactions require an injection (EpiPen) and 911. ...Read more
Can a person have a rash develop from bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) a day after finishing a 7-day course of the drug?
Probably > 1day.: A person can have a rash from Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or any other drug, but it likely developed during the course of the drug, not after. It may have been too subtle at first, and could have been attributed to other things, like food allergy or contact allergy from clothes washed with a detergents that can cause a rash in those who are susceptable. ...Read more

Increases free drug: Much of Coumadin is bound to protein. Many drugs, including bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) dislodge it from protein and increase the free (active) drug in the circulation. This usually results in a sharp spike in the inr and can lead to bleeding. If you must take batrim, you may need to skip a dose or two of coumadin. Discuss with your doctor. ...Read more
Is there a negative interaction between bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) ds and coumadin?
How common are serious side effects with the drug Bactrim? Is this drug safer than Cipro (ciprofloxacin)? I'm taking it for a prostate infection.
Prostate infection: Assuming your doc didn't have lab data demonstrating bacteria & antibiotic resistance (commonly referred to as culture & sensitivity), Cipro (ciprofloxacin)floxacin is better than Trimethoprim/Sulfamethoxazole at getting into the prostate. All quinolones like Cipro (ciprofloxacin) carry a Black Box warning against tendonitis & tendon rupture, which while rare, is more common in elderly patients. Is there another drug combination for diverticulitis besides Flagel? I am also taking Bactrim due to allergies to Cipro, (ciprofloxacin) Keflex and Penecillin.
Antibiotic allergies: You need the help of an ID doctor-since they are experts in antibiotics. First, I would want to 'define' ur allergies further-because sometimes a patient is labeled as 'allergic' & they aren't really allergic at all. That is really important. If ur truly allergic to penicillin, cephalosporins & cipro (ciprofloxacin) which is a fluoroquinolone, ur options are quite limited for oral therapy. Doxycycline might help. ...Read more
Are there any interactions between bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) and olive leaf extract? or can I take them simultaneously? also, Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) & garlic extract/monoluarin?
Most important thing: you must know when taking Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is that it can form crystals in your kidneys if you don't hydrate enough. So taking larges amount of filtered water to protect your kidneys is paramount. Olive leaf extract which is the heart of the mediterranean diet should not pose a problem, but it's always good to take your supplements separately from your medications in general. You can take UR supplements. ...Read more

Hi. Male and 40. Couldn't orgasm tonight. Recently went to ER for uti and dehydration. On Bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) trazedone, and Prozac. Do these drugs cause this?
Possible: Both Prozac (fluoxetine) and Trazodone can cause decreased libido as side effects. You are taking two antidepressants. Not clear why this is necessary. Suggest you discuss with prescribing doctor to review these meds and consider lower dose(s). I hope this helps. Best wishes. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
