I keep getting reinfected with bacterial vaginosis after sex with my boyfriend. Why?

I keep getting reinfected with bacterial vaginosis after sex with my boyfriend. Why?

Try condoms a while: If bacterial vaginosis keeps returning, a woman may be getting something from her partner. Both persons can examined by a doctor at about the same time, to see if there are other contributing factors. A woman might recover better if she keeps semen out of her vagina for a while, to allow her vagina to naturally self-clean and return to normal. That means using condoms for some weeks. ...Read more

I'm starting to take Bacterial Vaginosis tablets tomorrow. (Monday) When will it be okay for me to have sex?

Best to wait a while: Best to plan on two weeks. For sure no sex until treatment is done (a week) and your symptoms haven't returned after another week. If sex is inevitable before then, use condoms for sure -- and you may help prevent recurrence of BV by continued condom use after that. I hope you were tested for STDs. BV is not an STD, at least not usually, but other STDs are more common in women with BV. Best wishes ...Read more

I have bacterial vaginosis, can I give it to my boyfriend if he performs an oral sex act on me (goes down on me)?

Hold off for a while: No, you probably cannot infect your boyfriend. However, BV sometimes is triggered by oral sex, and oral bacteria may contribute to causing it. Therefore, oral sex might prlong your infection or make it worse, and it would be best to avoid it until you have been successfully treated. I trust you have been tested for STDs like gonorrhea and chlamydia, which are much more common in women with BV. ...Read more

Protected sex , I have burning sensation they said it was bacterial vaginosis , 3 weeks later I have small flesh bumps. ?

Get rechecked: Something doesn't quite fit. Bacterial vaginosis usually doesn't cause a burning sensation or genital bumps. Genital warts usually aren't "fleshy", but that might be a possibility. Or maybe nothing abnormal? It doesn't sound like herpes or any other STD. You need to be rechecked by the doctor or clinic where you were seen 3 weeks ago. Best to avoid sex until then. Good luck! ...Read more

Became sexually active in December. Had Bacterial Vaginosis in February, and now I have it again. Only one sex partner. What am I doing wrong?

Maybe nothing...: There is a debate among STD experts whether BV is an STD. It is closely related to sex. Cases like yours support the STD theory, but it's not known if some (most? all?) cases are due to catching a particular germ that causes it. Treating the male partners usually doesn't help. See GUM specialist, check for other STDs, re-treat (metronidazole), and use condoms consistently for the next few weeks. ...Read more

Can bacterial vaginosis be caused by a method other than sex? My friend got it at a time when she was not sexually active. She's had 2 partners ever.

Not by sex: Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is not caused by sex, although it is more common in women who are active. BV is not really an infection, but an imbalance in the normal bacteria in the vagina. The healthy bacteria aren't doing well, so bad bacteria overgrows, causing the symptoms. Antibiotics suppress the bad bacteria, but it's important to do probiotics, like acidophilus (in yogurt) to restore the good. ...Read more
