I guess that perioprotect would need to be used 3 x's a day since 3 meals. I think bacteria reforms after one hour. So, what is its real value?
Local control: It's similar to when you have an infection, you don't have to take antibiotics every hour in order for it to be effective. The biggest difference is that with perioprotect you are controlling the biofilm and bacterial colonies under the gum line and in-between the teeth at a local level rather than systemically. ...Read more

If bacteria become resistant to cephalosporins, what can be used to treat UTI in elderly person or one with renal damage?
Other options.: Use of an antibiotic to which the bacteria are resistant will result in treatment failure. Possibly exposed to meningoencephalitis. Unknown if viral or bacteria. Dr. prescribing Ciprofloxacin 500mg. Have one kidney, born this way. Is safe?
Prevent meningitis: Your doc has put you on what's called 'chemoprophylaxis' -which is using medication to prevent infection after a possible exposure. I trust ur doc weighed the benefits vs. Very small risks of putting you on therapy. Indeed, Cipro (ciprofloxacin) is a very good medicine for this -and with having only one kidney it should be OK. You should take a 1x dose. That lessens the chance for side-effects further. ...Read more

I just had a repeat urinalysis because I was menstruating on the first one. First one showed negative occult blood +3 and the second urinalysis a couple of weeks later showed negative occult blood +1, no bacteria seen. What could be the causes?
All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, the 3+ in the first test may be due to contamination with menstrual blood. The 1+ in the second one may not be significant.
