For back pain relief, is it better to sit on an ergonomic office chair or a fitness ball?

For back pain relief, is it better to sit on an ergonomic office chair or a fitness ball?

If long periods seated at a desk are giving you a sore back, your office chair may need adjusting to give you better back support — or you may even need a new chair designed to reduce back pain: Sitting on a fitness ball for office work is not recommended. To stay upright on a fitness ball, you have to make constant, small adjustments in muscle tension and weight distribution. This effort helps you achieve the benefits of core-strengthening exercises performed with a fitness ball. Prolonged balancing on a fitness ball during a full day of work, however, may lead to increased fatigue and discomfort in your back. ...Read more

Will a support belt or brace keep my low back safe when I lift at work?

No!: Elastic support belts or braces do not keep you safe when doing heavy lifting at work. Only your brain keeps you safe. These belts and braces only serve as a "reminder" to be safe. When lying in bed, is it advisable to wear hose stockings, plus to have feet up resting on pillows? Or feet up without hose? Or hose without pillows?

When lying in bed, is it advisable to wear hose stockings, plus to have feet up resting on pillows? Or feet up without hose? Or hose without pillows?

I assume: You are doing all this to combat swollen extremities. Elevation of feet is helpful. The hoosiery does not have to be worn at night. It is meant to wear when standing to combat effects of gravity. True elevation is above heart level so the pillows are a good idea. It too though may not be necessary. Most of the time when people awake they have no swelling in the morning with no pillow as well. ...Read more

Bedridden one year with no insurance, can't afford pT. But can sitting up in a chair help me?

Any exercise > none: Any exercise (physical activity) is better than none. My bigger concern is why you've been "bedridden" for a year and to what extent. If truly bedridden, then even sitting up may be difficult. More importantly, in this day & age, no one should go w/o healthcare even if s/he doesn't have insurance. Can a too-firm mattress cause morning achiness, neck & back pain? How do I find a mattress that is both comfortable and provides proper support?

Muscles and bones: The most important part of good posture is strong muscles and healthy bones. As we age, we lose muscle mass.
