Management and treatment range from the very conservative such as anti-inflammatories and physical therapy to epidurals and other interventions. Surgery is usually a last resort. ...Read more

Any OTC med replace methocarbamol 500mg? lower back pain, X-ray's 4 month ago, dr said I need this. Pain back do I need go back dr or can take OTC med

Return to doctor: If the doctor has determined that you are best treated with prescription methocarbamol for your back condition then, it is much wiser to return to the doctor if things are not working out instead of self medicating with OTC meds and allowing your condition (whatever's causing the pain) to progress unbeknownst to the doctor. That would be a classic example of exactly HOW NOT TO TREAT YOURSELF. ...Read more

Went to PCP because my son was having back pain. X-rays showed nothing, so now an MRI. Pain on spine. What might they be looking for? Worried.

Went to PCP because my son was having back pain. X-rays showed nothing, so now an MRI. Pain on spine. What might they be looking for? Worried.

Looking for anything: Hate to be vague, but the point of the MRI is to really see the spine at a detail that the xray can't. It shows disc space, bulging or herniated discs, masses, etc. The MRI is really THE test to have when evaluating back pain.Try to relax and remember that getting the test doesn't mean it is going to find anything wrong. All my best. ...Read more

I have lower back pain. X rays reveal a narrowing disc space l2/l3. The doc did not note that the right transverse process is also skew. Can this caus?

I have lower back pain. X rays reveal a narrowing disc space l2/l3. The doc did not note that the right transverse process is also skew. Can this caus?

Maybe: All back symptoms have to be correlated with xray findings to see if they are causing you symptoms. A defect in a transverse process shouldn't be symptomatic but there is a defect called a pars interarticularis defect that is thought to be caused by early trauma that can cause pain. You should know that it is very common to find disc narrowing on xrays and mri's. ...Read more

Upper right back pain, ct, X-ray show arthritis. Three weeks, two sessions therapy. No help. Any ideas?

Get a DEXA scan: At your age even if you have arthritis there is a chance the pain is from Osteoporosis. A DEXA scan will help sort this out. If the pain is from arthritis it usually requires a combination of physical therapy( the best long term answer) and arthritis medication or injections to control the symptoms short term. It is not unusual for the treatment to take time. ...Read more
