Sounds like he's: Coughing hard & has pleuritic chest pain; irritation of the lining around the lungs. Is he up-to-date on his immunizations? There have been some whooping cough (pertussis) outbreaks & older kids don't necessarily " whoop." he needs to see his pediatrician, who'll probably get a chesr xray & labs. If it's in the center of the back and it's more painful or tender when you touch it then it's worth getting seen for it to make sure it's not an infection of the spine or other suspicious lesion. Watch for any leg weakness or numbness.
