I get a sharp right lower back pain anytime I move or take a deep breath. What could this be?

Back pain: The most common causes of pain in this area is inflammation of the sacroiliac joint. Also, an inflamed facet joint in the lumbar spine or the sacrospinous ligament can cause this pain. Kidney stones can be a source of pain too. Begin with anti-inflammatory medications and apply ice to the affected area. If the pain persists then see a medical doctor. ...Read more

I always get extreme back pain when I get up from laying on my stomach for a couple seconds. It's so bad that it takes my breath away.

Avoid stomach laying: This could be anything from a sprain/strain to a herniated disc to a pinched nerve etc. You'll need formal evaluation to get a better answer, but for now it would be reasonable to treat conservatively with NSAIDs (ibuprofen or Aleve), ice/heat, and activity modifications. Also I would avoid laying on your stomach since that does place increased strain on your back. ...Read more

I have middle back pain and pain under my left rib cage. There is an increase in pain when I take a deep breath, what could this be?

Pleurisy: Sounds like it could be pleurisy. If you don't have a rash on your skin that looks like blisters (which would be shingles), this is likely an inflammation of the lining of your lungs. Ibuprofen (if ok with your system) is the treatment of choice. Other possibilities are a pulled ribcage muscle - if that's the case, Ibuprofen is still the treatment. ...Read more

I am having upper back pain whenever I take a deep breath. This pain tends to get worse at night. What is the cause/treatment for this?

Rib dysfunction: Pain in mid & upper back aggravated by inhalation is usually due to a rib being locked down. Usually ribs move up & down w/ inhalation/exhalation. When a rib is locked down, it cannot rise with inhalation causing pain. Sometimes a vertebra locked (bent forward) can cause similar pain. Either way, a good history & phys incl osteopathic hands-on exam can usually locate the cause & manipulation may fix it. ...Read more

Pain in chest and back when I take a deep breath in and when I exhale fully. Back pain is like where my lungs are. Chest pain to the left. Ideas why?

Rib dislocation: Could be a rib dislocation or possibly costochondritis (inflammation of where the ribs and cartilage meet). I have middle back pain and pain under my left rib cage. There is an increase in pain when I take a deep breath, it is not muscular, what could it be?

Difficult to say: There are many possibilities here. The pain could be coming from the spine. I am not sure how you know it is not muscular. Other possible pain generators include the lungs, ribs or the internal organs. This could be a pain that originates exactly where you feel it or could be referred from a more distant location. You need a good physical examination by an md/do who is used to dealing with this. ...Read more
