Back Pain Just Below Shoulder Blades
Mid back pain starts just below shoulder blades and radiates around to the front just below breasts left worse than right What is possible cause?
Upper back pain: This is radicular pain from an irritated nerve root exiting from the thoracic 7/8 region. Inflammation of the rib head as it attaches to the spine is common. Other causes include muscle/tendon strain or a pinched nerve from a herniated disc. Anti-inflammatory medications, massage, and ice packs may relieve the pain. If the symptoms persist, then see your medical doctor.
Likely muscle pain: Myofascial pain is the most common pain in the upper back area. Www. Otwithmd. Com.
Muscular dysfunction: Most pain between the shoulder blades are do to poor muscular function resulting in dysfunction and poor endurance. This results in myofascial pain and local compression of small nerves running through the layers of muscular tissue and fascia. Physical therapy is very good for improving these issues but they need to specialize in myofasical release techniques. Check with your pcp.
Neck exercises: Most commonly pain between shoulder blades is as a result of cervical degeneration and loss of normal alignment. So exercise needs to include building up neck muscles and squeezing shoulder blades squeezing together and holding together for three seconds.
Get checked.: I don't want to be an alarmist, but you could be having symptoms related to your heart. Heart disease symptoms in women are especially difficult to sort out. Other possibilities, of course, include gastro-esophagel reflux and gallbladder stones. It's the part where you say the chest in the middle feels "bloated" that makes me want you to go off to the er to be checked. Good luck. Lgromkomd.
Scapula Pain: Inflammation can occur underneath the shoulder blade where there is a bursa. This is called scapulothoracic bursitis and can be treated with therapy, NSAIDS, pain medications, and possibly a steroid injection. Make an appointment with an Orthopaedic shoulder surgeon to be evaluated and discuss treatment options. Take care, Joe Wilson.
Could be a number: Of things and only a physical exam and imaging could say for sure. However, this is a common place to have rhomboid spasms. See http://www. Livestrong. Com/article/359550-stretches-for-rhomboids/ perform these stretches to see if they help. See a doc if no improvement. Best of luck!
Local PM;R doc: Seek out a local pm;r doctor. Without more detail it's impossible to tell for sure, but this is likely not a surgical issue. Pain at the level of the scapula could be muscle pain in the rhomboids or thoracic paraspinal muscles. Interspinous ligament sprain. Fixated thoracic facet joints (a chiropractic issue). Numerous other possibilities too. Trigger point injections may help. Pt maybe.
See below: Upper back pain usually comes from a degenerative joint or disc in the neck. Sometimes it's from a muscle strain or sprain. It is common for back pain to refer to the shoulder blades. Early treatment options include a short course of nsaids (advil, aleve), gentle massage, moist heat, and focusing on posture. If pain lasts greater than 2 weeks see your physician.
When I bend over while standing up, I have sudden/sharp back pain in my spine between the lower end of my shoulder blades. Possibilities?
A couple of thoughts: Sharp pain at the lower edge of the shoulder blades aggravated by bending over may be caused by thoracic disc inj./vertebral dysftn/nerve compression/ligament inj or rib dysfunction, usually. X-rays will rarely reveal the cause.MRI may show disc inj., but only a good phys. Incl. Osteopathic hands-on exam will likely find the other causes. Care may then incl. Manipulation/prolotherapy/surg/meds, etc.See 1 more doctor answer
Too late: Since you have been waiting a while for this answer (sorry), I am sure it is too late to go to the er. Back pain between the shoulder blades is one of the most common "pains" that I see in my practice and can be caused from many daily living activities from computer use to large breasts. Have a chest x-ray to be safe especially if you are a smoker.
Not simple: Assuming no direct trauma to the bones or chest wall, can be arthritis, gall bladder disease, or even an odd chest tumor.
Get checked: Lots of things could be going on but when between the shoulder blades I consider cervical problems like a herniated disc.
