Stones vs. spasms: Clearly back problems can result in flank region discomfort. However my concern in that location is always whether or not the symptoms could be originating from the kidneys. Kidney stones cause a condition called renal colic. In renal colic severe pain which comes and goes periodically can occur. Probably not kidneys: Low back pain is most often from the muscles or spine. Kidney pain is more in the mid-back. If your urine is not infected then the pain is probably not from your kidneys. I would suggest seeing your doctor or a chiropractor for further assessment of your back pain. Once they know the source they can recommend treatment. ...Read more
