Can I use polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) on oil burns?

Can I use polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) on oil burns?

First degree?: It does not matter how the burn occurred, but the depth and magnitude of the burn. If it's a first degree burn, polysporin is fine. If it is a more severe second degree burn or a large area, best you see a doc for prescription medicine like silvadene, (silver sulfadiazine) which is better coverage for bacteria that are likely to complicate burn healing. Keep areas clean, but don't overdo it and cause more irritation. ...Read more

I have been putting polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) on a burn for the past 3-4 days. Just realized it expired in 2007/2008. Is this in any way dangerous?

Polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin): The outdated polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) will not hurt you and will be fine to use. Many expiration dates are not scientifically valid. Think of it as an expiration date on a bar of soap. ...Read more

Can you put polysporin (bacitracin and polymyxin) on a hot water burn?

For a second-degree: ... Burn, keep the wound clean and apply a topical antibiotic ointment (e.g., polysporin, (bacitracin and polymyxin) bacitracin, neosporin, triple-antibiotic ointment). Also be sure to get good nutrition so that you have all the necessary building blocks for wound healing. If the wound is not healing soon (i.e., in 1 to 2 weeks), or if it seems like it is getting infected, seek formal medical attention. ...Read more

We started using bacitracin already for a second degree burn with blisters. I was told to use it. Is it ok?

NO!!!!!: Bacitracin does not prevent infections. Bacitracin is a common sensitizer. It is one of the most common causes of allergic reactions. Usually the reactions just cause local itch, redness, swelling, poor wound healing. A few deaths have occurred. Treat it with water irrigation and vaseline or Aquaphor. ...Read more

During a shower today, some very hot water got into my vagina and caused some burning sensation. Can it cause cancer and can I use Bacitracin ointment?

No and no: I'm sorry you got a burn. You'd do well to turn the water temperature down in your shower, but the heat exposure isn't going to give you cancer. If you have a simple, visible burn, simple first aid is sufficient, otherwise simply keep the area clean. ...Read more

See your doctor!: If it is a burn, you may need wound care since your face can be disfigured. More worrisome is that the burn is actually an infection or an abscess caused by bacteria such as strept or staph. If not treated, the infection can quickly get worse. The doctor can examine to determine you will need just antibiotics or additional interventions. ...Read more

Got my hair relaxed yesterday & I got a quater sized ozzing burn on my ear. Tried bacitracin zinc but it really hurts and itches. How long til it heals?

Irritant dermatitis.: I assume the hairdresser spilled some of the relaxing chemical on your ear - which gives you an idea of how strong that stuff is! Bacitracin is not going to get it done; a steroid cream, if you have one, might help somewhat, and hold a washcloth soaked in warm water to the area in the evening, perhaps while you're watching tv. If it's not markedly better in a few days, let your doctor take a look. ...Read more

Can I use bacitracin topical antibiotic for a cut on my skin while taking accutane?

Can I use bacitracin topical antibiotic for a cut on my skin while taking accutane?

Yes: But Bacitracin has not been shown to be of any value on any kind of wound. In experimental studies, those using vaseline or aquaphor healed the same or better than Bacitracin when used on surgical wounds. Bacithacin is a common sensitizer. A few years ago it was named the allergen of the year. Same for neosporin and triple antibiotic. Wash the cut, then keep it lubricated. ...Read more

Skin abscess: In teenagers, it is not uncommon to suffer from acne. This can be related to a variety of normal growth issues, and also to physical activity, hygiene, and topical products used. I would typically not encourage multiple popping of blackheads or skin abscesses. The fingers could contaminate the wound further with other bacteria and cause a worse infection. Best to use soap and water regularly. ...Read more

Can mupirocin calcium cream 2% be substituted for Bacitracin for skin irritations due to disposable undergarments?

Short term use: If you have minor skin irritation it is ok to use topical antimicrobials. However I would not recommend using it indefinitely as it may cause antibiotic resistance. My son had a small skin infection from a pimple on his face been taken care with bacitracin and its cured, but he still has a dark spot whatcan I do?

Sunscreen, exfoliate: The dark spot is a hyperpigmentation scar that will fade on its own. The most important thing is to wear sunscreen everyday as the spots can get darker in the sun. An over-the-counter cream containing retinol or aha can help exfoliate the spot and speed the healing, however these creams can irritate the skin. Even with the creams it will take a few weeks to months to heal, so be patient. ...Read more

Is it true that bacitracin zinc ointment helps a staph skin infection?

How do I soothe sensitive, irritated facial skin? I tried polysporin, (bacitracin and polymyxin) vaseline, giving it a break, hot water, cold water, ice, oatmeal-honey mask.!?

Sunscreen Moisturize: The first way to soothe sensitive skin is to avoid hot water and detergent based facial soaps. Wash your face with a soap-free facial cleanser (cetaphil, dove for sensitive skin) and lukewarm water. Every morning, apply a facial moisturizer that contains a broad spectrum sunscreen containing zinc oxide (elta md facial, skinceuticals). ...Read more

What is a better choice for skin staph infection: maximum strength neosporin or bacitracin with zinc along with the oral antibiotic doxycyline? Thanks

Doxycycline: The treatment of choice for any staph infection is oral Doxycycline (or one of the other antibiotics indicated for staph). Topical creams such as neosporin or Bacitracin are relatively ineffective; they might have a small supplemental effect when used with an oral antibiotic, but should not be used by themselves for staph. ...Read more

What happens to the skin during burns?

What happens to the skin during burns?

An injury: The seriousness of the injury depends on how deeply the skin is injured: a superficial burn is like a sunburn and will generally heal quickly, perhaps with a little peeling. A full thickness burn extends through the entire thickness of the skin and will not heal on its own except by scarring and contracture. Between these two extremes are partial thickness burns-some heal, some don't. ...Read more
