The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). This empties into the colon or large intestine (about 5 feet), which then becomes the sigmoid colon, rectum and out the anus. So, every morsel eaten ...Read more

See a surgeon.: If you've had surgery before, it is likely that you might have adhesions. Though most adhesion related bowel obstruction clears up with conservative measures, some cases need to undergo surgery again. It would be best for you to see a reputable conservative surgeon as soon as possible to get a better assessment clinically and with imaging studies. ...Read more

Need Definitive Dx: "twisted bowel" usually refers to a small bowel obstruction, a diagnosis that can only be made by history (vomiting, pain, no flatus or bm) exam (distention), and x-ray; with few exceptions, this requires hospitalization & possible surgery. If this does not go along with your clinical picture, I would search for an alternate diagnosis--perhaps a second opinion would be a good idea? ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Quite possibly: You say your small intestine was knotted up. That could indeed be midgut volvulus in which your small bowel was twisted around a narrow mesentery, or connection of the bowel to the back of the abdominal cavity. That is almost always seen in intestinal malrotation, when the bowel did not situate in the right location in the abdomen as it was being formed in the fetus. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can severe long term bloating damage the intestine permanently? Does it cause diverticular, volvulus or adhesions? Thank you
Varies: Every infant has different routine for passing stool, some may poop daily some every other day. Usually breast fed babies poop more often, after every feed. Yes: Baby stool (poop) can be light colored, usually a blend of yellow with some brown or green. However, if the poop gets lighter and lighter in color, becoming a grey/white color, then there is a problem (not enough bile is mixing into the stool). A doctor will then need to evaluate the baby, to look for a liver or gall bladder problem causing the very light colored stool. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
It depends: The problem is that babies aren't coordinated and don't open their sphincter immediately when they have a bowel movement. Also, it's harder to have a bowel movement when you are lying down. As long as the stool is soft, there really isn't a problem with them straining a bit. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is anything wrong. If the stool is hard balls, see your doctor for help. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
BM in formula fed: Infant. They may go from several times a day to once a week. It is very much a variable thing. The idea that an infant has to go everyday or they are not " normal" is just not true. Think about how different we all are as adults. As long as baby does not have a rock hard tender abdomen, no fever, is eating well, and not tearing its little bum when it goes it is okay. What goes in will come out. ...Read more
Is it normal for my infant (4weeks old) who is breastfed to have 10-12 bowel movements a day and he cries and seems to be in serious pain?
Pain isn't normal: It is common for some breast fed babies to have a bowel movement with each feeding (sometimes, just small squirts). As long as it is soft, not hard balls, it is usually normal. But, if your baby really seems uncomfortable and cries excessively, he should be checked by his doctor. ...Read more
