Get help!: Depending on age e.g. Between 3 and 6 months apnea like this is sometimes a forerunner of sids. No matter that a doctor does not find any abnormality, insist on an apnea monitor until the danger period is over (about the end of the first year). You may not get any alarms but you will surely sleep better. If the child is older it might be sleep apnea.

Breath-holding: Spells can occur in infants, sometimes with " passing out" from constriction of blood vessels in the brain from blowing off carbon dioxide. If it's a breath-holding spell, you'll need to ignore it in an 11-mo.-old so it won't become a "learned behavior." you'll only be able to do so after your pediatrician rules out cardiac or neurological problems that shouldn't be ignored.

Mgt/workup: Premature infants are developing their pattern of breathing, and it is not uncommon to have short pauses. If there is a pause longer than 15 seconds or any distress/color change, an apnea test can be useful in determining the cause. If there is a pattern during sleep, observe your daughter for pauses, and discuss with your PCP. Note any upper airway noise or movement of her arms/legs.

My 11 month old son stops breathing numerous times a night for about 10 seconds each. What's wrong with him?

Several reasons: This cessation of breathing in an infant can be central - nervous system, obstruction - blocking air entering his lungs or a mix of both. This is rare in full term infants and should be evaluated by his physician for a cause.

M.D. visit: It is important to check with your doctor. There are many causes of apnea in this age group. These will include enlarged adenoids, airway narrowing or central nervous system problems. Babies breathe through their noses and any congestion can also cause apnea. Keeping their nasal passages clear is important.

My gf son is vomiting a lot but he stops breathing after he's vomits then starts breathing. What should she do?

Not enough info: Would need to know how old child is, any prematurity history, ongoing medical conditions, duration of the apneic periods, etc., etc. If in doubt, at minimum, page pediatrician and ask for advice--if unable to contact, get checked in er for child's safety & wellbeing.
