Is it normal for a baby to squirm and move when he is making a bowel movement?

Yes: Its also normal for your baby to become red in the face and grimace as if s/he is in pain. As long as your baby has soft stool they are not constipated. Remember breastfed babies over a month of age may go up to 10 days or 2 weeks without having a stool and this does not mean they are constipated. ...Read more

Intestine (Definition)

The gastrointestinal tract starts at the mouth, travel down the tunnel (esophagus), which connects to the stomach, which then empties into the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum---the three parts of the small intestine (@25 feet). This empties into the colon or large intestine (about 5 feet), which then becomes the sigmoid colon, rectum and out the anus. So, every morsel eaten ...Read more

How long before infant has a bowel movement without struggling?

How long before infant has a bowel movement without struggling?

It depends: The problem is that babies aren't coordinated and don't open their sphincter immediately when they have a bowel movement. Also, it's harder to have a bowel movement when you are lying down. As long as the stool is soft, there really isn't a problem with them straining a bit. It doesn't necessarily mean that there is anything wrong. If the stool is hard balls, see your doctor for help. ...Read more

Why do I find blood in my infant's diaper when she has not made a bowel movement?

Why do I find blood in my infant's diaper when she has not made a bowel movement?

Is it blood?: First, is it blood? Newborns especially can pass dark urine that when dried in a diaper can look like blood. Sometimes genuine blood can come from bloody vaginal discharge (normal in a newborn), or from a crack or fissure near the anus. Not sure what's going on? Go see the pediatrician for an exam. ...Read more

My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?

My 12 week old formula fed infant appears to be constipated. Is there anything I can do to help him have a bowel movement?

Yes, but...: Keep in mind the symptoms of constipation are by definition hard and painful to pass stools. Remember a little pushing and uncomfortableness is ok as long as the stools are soft. Also an every other day stool for some bottle fed babies is fine. Keep in mind the position babies are in as they stool, FLAT ON THEIR BACK. Can you imagine? One oz water and one oz apple juice once will help. ...Read more

How long should a formula fed infant do between bowel movements?

How long should a formula fed infant do between bowel movements?

BM in formula fed: Infant. They may go from several times a day to once a week. It is very much a variable thing. The idea that an infant has to go everyday or they are not " normal" is just not true. Think about how different we all are as adults. As long as baby does not have a rock hard tender abdomen, no fever, is eating well, and not tearing its little bum when it goes it is okay. What goes in will come out. ...Read more

Is it normal for my infant's bowel movements to be lightly colored?

Is it normal for my infant's bowel movements to be lightly colored?

Yes: Baby stool (poop) can be light colored, usually a blend of yellow with some brown or green. However, if the poop gets lighter and lighter in color, becoming a grey/white color, then there is a problem (not enough bile is mixing into the stool). A doctor will then need to evaluate the baby, to look for a liver or gall bladder problem causing the very light colored stool. ...Read more

Is it normal for my infant (4weeks old) who is breastfed to have 10-12 bowel movements a day and he cries and seems to be in serious pain?

Pain isn't normal: It is common for some breast fed babies to have a bowel movement with each feeding (sometimes, just small squirts). As long as it is soft, not hard balls, it is usually normal. But, if your baby really seems uncomfortable and cries excessively, he should be checked by his doctor. ...Read more

How can breastfed babies go so many days without having bowel movements?

How can breastfed babies go so many days without having bowel movements?

Digestible: Breast milk is very easily digestible. Nearly all the nutrients are absorbed and there is very little fiber which passes into bowel movements. It is completely normal for breast fed babies to have soft bowel movements every 1-4 days. Call your doctor if the stools are very hard- like little balls- or if the stools are extremely watery. ...Read more

My breastfed infant is a month old and for the last few days she has been having 1-2 bowel movements a day. Is she constipated if so what to give her?

My breastfed infant is a month old and for the last few days she has been having 1-2 bowel movements a day. Is she constipated if so what to give her?

Probably OK: It is not unusual for babies to have change in stool pattern as they grow. . Also, it is normal for breastfed babies to have longer periods of time with no stools. Breast milk is the perfect baby food, thus there is less "waste" so to speak. If the baby's stomach is not distended, and he has a large soft stool infrequently this is not constipation requiring intervention. ...Read more

Can simethicone cause fetal retention in babies? 11 days old took drops for gas all bowel movements for 3 days have been stimulated rectally.

Gas Drops: Simethicone can cause the stools to become harder in some cases. Give the baby some water (2 ounces twice a day) to encourage the stools. Also, the bowel movements are changing to the baby's normal stool pattern and maybe the baby only has to actually have a BM every 2-3 days. If the stools are coming soft when they come, everything is most likely fine. ...Read more

Having one bowel movement daily but still feeling like I need to move my bowels again....what could be causing this? I also don't feel very hungry....

Some thoughts: cannot say in your particular case, but some triggers of the feeling of needing to empty the bowels are spasm of the bowel (generally not a serious condition) or much less common, some growth there like a polyp. Hypothyroid typically changes bowel motility. ...Read more

My baby has not had a bowel movement for almost 2 days, is that normal?

My baby has not had a bowel movement for almost 2 days, is that normal?

Yes: If a baby is eagerly and happily feeding each day, if he has no tummy aches nor bloating, and if his poops are quite soft, then it is ok for him to poop only once every few days. If breastfeeding, he is digesting all the milk, and using almost all of it to maintain and grow his body (leaving very little solid material to make poop). The water part of milk is digested, and the baby urinates it out. ...Read more
