Why does a sedative sleeping pill relieve my spasticity but nothing else will?

Why does a sedative sleeping pill relieve my spasticity but nothing else will?

Sedatives: People have differing reactions to hypnotics (ambien, sonata (zaleplon) etc), benzodiazepines (Xanax, klonopin etc) muscle relaxants (flexural etc) and other central nervous system depressants so you need to work closely with your doctor to find solutions. In my sleep classes I have people keep sleep diaries so we can clearly measure the effect or lack thereof. Recommend using a daily log of the med use and ef ...Read more

Does anyone know what CAUSES (i.e. physiology) the extreme fatigue in MS? (No sleep disturbance, have adequate intake and exerc., spasticity treated)

Brief response: Fatigue is very common in MS and typically best correlated with "burden of disease" illustrated on MRI studies. If you have MS, we can evaluate your current medication and dietary program, and perhaps modify and improve the entire picture. Schedule a Concierge visit and I would be happy to provide a "second opinion". ...Read more

Can swaddling help babies sleep?

Can swaddling help babies sleep?

Yes: There perhaps is something about recreating that intrauterine environment which some infants find most comforting--swaddling. Neatly tucking a baby into a pea pod shaped bundle can provide security and warmth unlike anything else. So, once all snuggled in, sleep can not help but to come much more easily. Try it, you will like it...And so will baby! ...Read more

Want tips on how to make an infant sleep?

Want tips on how to make an infant sleep?

Help settle: You can't " make" a child eat, sleep or use the potty. Do what dr. Carlin recommended, wipe out baby's mouth after the last feed & put him in his crib in his own room, drowsy but awake at the same time every night. Most healthy infants don't need a middle of the night feed after 6 months, when night waking becomes a learned behavior. American academy of pediatrics has a good book on birth-5. ...Read more

Is polyester safe for babies to sleep on?

Is polyester safe for babies to sleep on?

Yes: Some parents prefer natural fibers like cotton, but polyester is fine. Unlike cotton, if it catches fire, it melts rather than burns. That's the main safety difference. Poly tends to be less breathable or moisture absorbent than cotton, but it also depends on the type of fabric. ...Read more

Tell me when do babies sleep through the night?

Tell me when do babies sleep through the night?

That varies: New babies don't sleep through the night because they need to awaken to feed. As they get bigger, they sleep longer. Most babies can safely do an 8 hour stretch when they're several months old; some do it a little younger, some a little older. Babies are people; what happens one way in one happens a bit differently in another. ...Read more

Three to four months: Babies are capable of one period of deep sleep (3-4hrs) per 24 hours starting at birth and generally drift in and out of lighter sleep states for the rest of their day. How can I get my infant to sleep through the night?

How can I get my infant to sleep through the night?

Good sleep routine: This is possible for almost all little ones, but is more than can be described in 400 characters. Consistency, a regular sleep routine, keeping the home quiet and dark at night, and helping them learn to self-settle are essential. Talk with your pediatrician about the details, but know that it is possible - once you are ready! (the secondary gain from "comforting" your baby at night is powerful.). ...Read more

Can you tell me how do lullabies help babies sleep?

I think in my case,: It soothes my children so that they relax enough for their brain waves to start slowing down. When my daughter can't sleep she asks me to sing her to sleep. Do babies go into sleep mode before labor?

Hard to say: Babies "mode" during labor would be hard to study. Sleep states are generally documented by eeg study, which is impossible in labor. Labor itself can vary in length from a few hours to a day or more and I doubt baby would be aleart or asleep for it all. Moms note fetal movements between contractions at various stages of labor, but movement can occur in sleep. Just list this as an unknown. ...Read more

Why do new borns and babies sleep so much?

Need for growth/dvp: Infants have few needs for function. This takes sleep and nutrition. As they enter their teen years again they grow faster and need more sleep, while adults may get by on little. Its all part of the balance in human growth. ...Read more

My infant won't sleep in basinette what should I do?

Drowsy but awake: Self soothing is a valuable skill that babies learn as newborns, when parents put them down drowsy but awake. When we hold babies until asleep, they associate parent's heartbeat, voice, rocking with sleep. Without those cues they can't fall asleep. Started as newborns, most babies learn to put themselves to sleep in 5-10", older children take longer to learn to self soothe-up to 60". ...Read more

Is it ok to put multiple babies in one crib to sleep?

Avoid co-bedding: Placing several babies in a single crib (aka co-bedding) increases the likelihood that none of them will get a good night's sleep. Co-bedding is also a major risk factor for sudden unexplained infant death (suid). So it is better, if possible, to provide a designated, segregated spot for each baby in order to guarantee uninterrupted sleep for the infant. ...Read more

They develope patterns just like adults. To change a pattern you have to do the same thing over and over for 21 days. Back is best: The back to sleep campaign that started in the 90's brought a 40% drop in crib death rates in the us. After initial resistance, most have come to understand it's value. Thankfully, the most vulnerable period has passed when kids can roll and turn over. Positioners, wedges and other items offered to stop this are unreliable. Infants should be on a firm mattress with no pillows, blankets or bumpers. ...Read more
