Baby Monitor (Overview)

Because baby's sleeping in the same room appears to reduce SIDS risk, it seems reasonable that a baby monitor would also decrease risk, especially if the baby is another room. However, research suggests there is little if any benefit for otherwise healthy babies.

Is it necessary to buy a baby monitor?

Is it necessary to buy a baby monitor?

No: Some parents like the convenience, but it's definitely not necessary. Babies are often sleeping in the same room as their parents for the first few months, so a baby monitor is not needed at night. The monitors are not protective for the baby (we've had healthy babies for a lot longer than we've had baby monitors), they just allow the parent a measure of comfort if they are in a separate room. ...Read more

What kind of baby monitor should I buy?

Not essential: Unless you live in a huge mansion, you will be able to hear your baby crying. Most new parents sleep in the same room as their newborn for the first few months anyway. Do you really need?: For quality-look it up online. BUT why do you need a monitor? When is it safe to stop using the baby monitor?

When is it safe stop using the baby monitor at night?

Personal Choice: It is important to know that monitors have not been shown to reduce risk of sids in babies. Turning off your monitor will have no impact on your babies sids risk. Risk reduction for sids includes breastfeeding, back sleeping in a "relatively" cool room (68 better than 75 degrees) without a hat. Your baby's sids risk takes a steep dive at 6 months of life. ...Read more

Should I wake my baby to monitor his fever throughout the night?

Not enough data: In general, I never wake a sick child unless they need timed medication (antibiotics). They need the sleep more than they need their temperature checked. There are tempdots, a strip applied to the forehead that registers the temperature continuously and can be read from a foot or more away. I don't find monitoring temp that helpful. Parents need to monitor fluid intake and pee patterns more. ...Read more

You can monitor....: ...His health every day yourself by noting how well he's eating/drinking/voiding/stooling/sleeping. If he's doing all of that well, he's likely healthy. Knowing this does not take away the need for regular exams by your pediatrician. Cholestasis of pregnancy - are there any alternatives to inducing at 37 weeks? Can you wait till proper full term of 39 weeks by monitoring baby often?

Balance: There is always a balance to consider in these situations. Not all babies give clear indications on the monitor that something is wrong, and stillbirth, when it happens, happens mostly without warning. You can talk with doctor about your specific situation, as well as the risks of prematurity at 37 weeks. How old do I need a monitor in my child's room?

Baby moniter: There's really no set time, but I would say when the baby starts sleeping through the night, and there are no more night feeds. If you are a deep sleeper, or in a far room; if you're afraid you'll miss them crying, longer. If you keep it, turn the volume down, so you can get a good night sleep, low enough to only hear crying. Some moms keep it till kids are in a big bed, and come and get them. ...Read more

Baby got sick 2m ago & started cosleeping 2 better monitor & administer meds. Now at 5mo we've been unable to transition her out of the bed. Advice?

Tough Love: You will have many miles before you sleep on this subject. It is a hard thing to correct but possible. Sometimes children will be alright with sleeping in their bed if someone is in the room. You may have to take turns staying in the room with your child until they fall asleep in their own bed. Taking turns helps it not be so stressful. It will be easier to give in but be strong. ...Read more

My baby is 3.5 months old. We use an owlet monitor (monitors HR & O2 sat) at night. He is sating in the low 90's. Is that ok?

Sats okay, . ....but: That's perfectly normal saturation for an infant. My bigger concern, though, is why you are doing this monitoring. Please don't turn into a helicopter mom to your child at just 3 months of age. Unless there is a very specific medical readon for this monitoring, please just let your baby sleep normally and in peace without being hooked up to make you feel more secure.... ...Read more
