Baby Large Head Circumference
Depends on gender ;: Velocity of growth. Has the head circumference grown normally along a single curve between 5th-95th%ile or increased too rapidly, e.g., jumping from 25th to 95th %ile (as may be seen in autism or hydrocephalus), or too slowly, e.g., dropping from 25th to 5th%ile, (indicating insufficient brain growth)? Girls' range at 9 months is 41.6-46.6 cm; avg. Is 44 cm. Boys, 43-47.4 cm; avg. Is 45.4 cm. ...Read more

17 wk old niece head circumference is on 99th percentile.50th percentile for height and weight. Is this a problem? Her mother has quite a large head.
Probably fine: It's fine for an infant to have a large head, as long as it stays at a fairly constant percentile. It's only when heads grow or shrink too quickly that the child should be evaluated further. Make sure to talk with ur baby's pediatrician if u r concerned. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Is there a correlation between abnormally large head circumference and an increased chance of neonatal seizures?
Yes.: Weight varies with height. But head size has nothing to do with height or weight. So although it is possible that someone's body could grow to match their large head, there is no guarantee it will happen. Further, the percentage of your body length that is your head is about 30% at birth, but only 10% as an adult, so babies tend to have bigger heads than adults. ...Read more

Relative study: His rating means that 10% of infants at this age have a larger head circumference (size) while 90% are smaller. If the size has increased from 25-50-75-90% over several months it would suggest growth was too rapid. If usually in that range, it just means the kid has a big head. It hasn't bothered me any, except for having trouble finding a helmet/hat that would fit. ...Read more
My child was diagnosed with macrocephaly.
I took her in to get an MRI done It came back normal. Is her head going to be abnormally large when teenager?
Error in dates / Pbm: Having a large head is relative. If you are supposed to be "x" weeks along you are supposed to have a head of a certain size, if your head is bigger, you might be further along. You might also have a developing problem in your head, but that is where a more specific ultrasound or interpretation by a specialist needs to be considered. ...Read more
