Not yet: A human 7-week fetus is described as being the size of a blueberry. He or she doesn't do much of anything (except grow). In order to sleep, there must be recurring "awake" periods, because sleep is the time in between "awake" periods. It will probably happen months later. ...Read more

When breastfeeding, will the baby not feeding off one breast cause problems? 7 weeks old.

When breastfeeding, will the baby not feeding off one breast cause problems? 7 weeks old.

Decrease supply: Breast milk production is dependent upon stimulation (suckling) from the breast. The side baby nurses from will produce lots of milk and the unused side will produce little or none. Not harmful to baby, but could be very uncomfortable-lopsided!- to mom. If you're having problems getting him to feed on one side-see pediatrician or lactation specialist. They can help this common problem. ...Read more

9weeks pregnant ultrasound shows twins. One baby healthy with heartbeat. Other baby stopped growing at 7weeks. Is this dangerous for the healthy baby?

No: at this early stage these findings are not worrisome. The range of findings at 9 weeks are such that both babies may be ok. Assume the best and relax now. An ultrasound in a month or so from now will be reassuring. ...Read more

I am 7 weeks pregnant and nursing a 6 month old. Should i stop nursing during pregnancy?

I am 7 weeks pregnant and nursing a 6 month old. Should i stop nursing during pregnancy?

Not necessarily: If/when the kid makes short work of feeds it may be an opportunity to stop & get ready for the new one. Weaning before the next one comes along helps diminish the displacement/competition issues. There is also a difference in your milk with early/ mature production. That said, some moms just keep on feeding and add the new one to the rotation. It is all in how you feel. ...Read more

4 month old baby born at 35w+3days. Should baby's born this early (5weeks) wait longer until they are introduced to solids?

Baby diet: Basically, in these days we do not recommend early introduction of solid food not even to full term infants because of food allergies. If the baby is growing well you may introduce the solid food around 6 mo of age unless otherwise advised by his pediatrician. ...Read more

Four first trimester ultrasounds done at 7 8 10 12 week all come. Up with same conception date. What's it mean??

Four first trimester ultrasounds done at 7 8 10 12 week all come. Up with same conception date. What's it mean??

Good estimates: One scan gives a good estimate of the conception date. A second scan that gives the same estimate, just gives more confidence that the first scan's estimate is accurate. Accurate means plus or minus one week - because nobody knows exactly when conception happens. However, if a woman knows exactly when she had sex, that can point to the conception date. Normally, people don't get so many scans. ...Read more

Delayed growth in womb of embryo around 6 month pregnancy by 15 days. Reasons?

Delayed growth in womb of embryo around 6 month pregnancy by 15 days. Reasons?

Two main reasons: If a pregnancy has accurate dating from early sonogram which is in agreement with lmp (last menstrual period) and one sees a greater than 2 week lag in growth from the expected, it could signal iugr (intrauterine growth restriction). This may be due to a placental problem or a genetic/developmental problem. Close monitoring of growth, amniotic fluid, and nst (nonstress test) is indicated. ...Read more

Can gas be a reason 7 week old baby isnt sleeping? (Breastfeeding)

Can gas be a reason 7 week old baby isnt sleeping? (Breastfeeding)

Yes: gas can be uncomfortable for newborns and can cause them to wake. However, 7 week olds may not be sleeping for other reasons as well. First question is how often is your baby sleeping. You likely have an 2 month well check coming up with your pediatrician and this is a great time to discuss sleep in detail so your current feeding/sleeping schedule can be reviewed. ...Read more
