Baby Head Circumference Growth
Head measurement: Was your child premature? If so there is a correction that can be made to more accurately determine appropriateness of head size. Was your baby small for gestational age? Has the head circumference been growing at a rate parallel to the isobars on the head circimference chart, wven though it may be below the 5th percentile. Speak to your pediatrician about these issues. ...Read more
Relative study: His rating means that 10% of infants at this age have a larger head circumference (size) while 90% are smaller. If the size has increased from 25-50-75-90% over several months it would suggest growth was too rapid. If usually in that range, it just means the kid has a big head.It hasn't bothered me any, except for having trouble finding a helmet/hat that would fit.. ...Read more
Hope so: I suppose you mean inches in circumference. This is is on the larger size for an adult, but since mine is bigger, i think it is fine. It does make finding head gear that fits a bit harder. It would be a bit off the chart for a 3 year old. ...Read more
More details?: The opening at the top of the baby's head is called a fontanelle. It usually gradually closes by the end of the first year to 15 months. If you are palpating a swelling in that area, the baby needs to be checked. An ultrasound may be performed through that opening. If the baby fell, and there is a swelling, the baby will need to be further assessed as well. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
10 week old baby length and weight both 85th percentile. Head circumference 95th percentile. Does this mean he has a big head in proportion to body?
Not really: I don't consider that difference worth anything more than noting. Big babies are big all over and this falls within the normal variation of such measurements. If the kid was 50% weight/length and 95% head, I would just measure the parents head to see where baby inherited it from. There are other issues to consider with a big head, but not from the reported info. ...Read more
13 week baby head circumference 98th percentile, ultrasound normal & hitting milestones,is there a reason to worry?worried first time mum!
Hi my 9 week old sons head circumference measures 16 inches he weighs 11pounds 8ounces, is that in the normal range for head measurement.
Head circumference: A head circumference of 16 inches at 9 weeks places him at the 95% for his age and sex. This is considered normal. I don't have a height, but his weight is about the 85%, so it seems from that he is generally a big boy. The more important factor, however, is interval growth from visit to visit. If he's always been at the 25% and suddenly is at 95%, that's more concerning than if he is always 95%. ...Read more
No: A flat head (plagiocephaly) does not affect development, and the flatness will go away as your baby spends more time on his tummy when awake and begins to roll, crawl and move. However, a baby who has developmental problems is more likely to have a persistent flat head since he is not moving around as he should. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
17 wk old niece head circumference is on 99th percentile.50th percentile for height and weight. Is this a problem? Her mother has quite a large head.
Probably fine: It's fine for an infant to have a large head, as long as it stays at a fairly constant percentile. It's only when heads grow or shrink too quickly that the child should be evaluated further. Make sure to talk with ur baby's pediatrician if u r concerned. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
My daughter 16 days old, her head size 31.5cm. Is it microcephaly?
(my wife 21years old, her head size 53cm, its smaller than other same age girls).
The whole 1st yr: Babies tend to triple their birth weight and grow about 10 inches over the first year. They will never have another long term growth rate this large, including puberty. There is some variation in this rate per child, but if you feel your baby is not growing you should discuss it with his/her doc. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I m concerned for baby head growth. She is 18 days old.Born with 37 CM head circumference today 40 cm.is that normal.
Large head: 40 cm at 18 days is large. IF there is no bulging of the fontanelle, the difference may be due to molding durign the delivery. Was this a large baby? Is there a family history of large heads. If there is any concern, speak to your pediatrician andi f necessary have an ultrasound done. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Depends: By definition, at least 3% of the normal population will grow along the smallest portion of the regular growth scales. Consistent growth along that or any percentile is not necessarily a failure to thrive. However;infants starting at the 25% & moving down to the 10% months later & heading toward the 5% in such measurements would be considered ftt because if the drop in growth rate. ...Read more
Any significance of head circumference 19 percentile at birth and 89 percentile at 8 years? Child does have level 1 autism diagnosis.
Depends: If it has changed from the 10% to the 97% since birth, I would be more concerned than if it was big all along. If his height and weight are on the larger side it would be more consistent with a normal variant. It didn't bother me much in life, except when looking for a helmet that would fit. ...Read more
