Growth Chart (Definition)

A growth chart is used by pediatricians to follow a child's growth over time. Growth charts have been constructed by observing the growth of large numbers of normal children over time. The height, weight, and head circumference of a child can be compared to the expected parameters of children of the same age and sex to determine whether the ...Read more

What does 90% percentile in infant head circumference mean?

Relative study: His rating means that 10% of infants at this age have a larger head circumference (size) while 90% are smaller. If the size has increased from 25-50-75-90% over several months it would suggest growth was too rapid. If usually in that range, it just means the kid has a big head.It hasn't bothered me any, except for having trouble finding a helmet/hat that would fit.. ...Read more

Baby's head measuring 1 week behind microcephaly?

Head measurement: Was your child premature? If so there is a correction that can be made to more accurately determine appropriateness of head size. Was your baby small for gestational age? Has the head circumference been growing at a rate parallel to the isobars on the head circimference chart, wven though it may be below the 5th percentile. Speak to your pediatrician about these issues. ...Read more

10 week old baby length and weight both 85th percentile. Head circumference 95th percentile. Does this mean he has a big head in proportion to body?

10 week old baby length and weight both 85th percentile. Head circumference 95th percentile. Does this mean he has a big head in proportion to body?

Not really: I don't consider that difference worth anything more than noting. Big babies are big all over and this falls within the normal variation of such measurements. If the kid was 50% weight/length and 95% head, I would just measure the parents head to see where baby inherited it from. There are other issues to consider with a big head, but not from the reported info. ...Read more

Is a 23 head circumference size normal?

Hope so: I suppose you mean inches in circumference. This is is on the larger size for an adult, but since mine is bigger, i think it is fine. It does make finding head gear that fits a bit harder. It would be a bit off the chart for a 3 year old. ...Read more

Hi my 9 week old sons head circumference measures 16 inches he weighs 11pounds 8ounces, is that in the normal range for head measurement.

Head circumference: A head circumference of 16 inches at 9 weeks places him at the 95% for his age and sex. This is considered normal. I don't have a height, but his weight is about the 85%, so it seems from that he is generally a big boy. The more important factor, however, is interval growth from visit to visit. If he's always been at the 25% and suddenly is at 95%, that's more concerning than if he is always 95%. ...Read more

My baby is in 75% percentile height and 25percentile weight.6 month old boy.17 lb at and 27.5 inch height.is it normal?

Tough word - normal: Being thin and tall is perfectly fine if the child is growing along their growth curves normally. Make sure your pediatrician or FP doctor is measuring height and weight and plotting them on a growth curve. If the baby odd changing percentiles over time, you may need to intervene with nutritional or medical help. Check with your doctor on this ! ...Read more

My baby weighs 9 lbs 6 oz at two weeks old what percentile is this on the growth chart ?

Full term?: If your baby was full term, this places him close to the 75% tile. What is important is his weight gain from birth. It takes more than 1 point on the curve to insure he is gaining weight. All the best. ...Read more

17 wk old niece head circumference is on 99th percentile.50th percentile for height and weight. Is this a problem? Her mother has quite a large head.

Probably fine: It's fine for an infant to have a large head, as long as it stays at a fairly constant percentile. It's only when heads grow or shrink too quickly that the child should be evaluated further. Make sure to talk with ur baby's pediatrician if u r concerned. ...Read more

My 3 month old girl has a head circumference of 38.5 CM ..at birth she measured 34cms.m worried abt her low growth ..is she ok?

Small head circumference and low weight percentile mean failure to thrive?

Small head circumference and low weight percentile mean failure to thrive?

Depends: By definition, at least 3% of the normal population will grow along the smallest portion of the regular growth scales. Consistent growth along that or any percentile is not necessarily a failure to thrive. However;infants starting at the 25% & moving down to the 10% months later & heading toward the 5% in such measurements would be considered ftt because if the drop in growth rate. ...Read more

Nine month old head size 97 percentile, is that bad?

Depends: If it has changed from the 10% to the 97% since birth, I would be more concerned than if it was big all along. Missing information: Head circumference is normal, near average, but we need the velocity of its growth. Head growth slows normally after 6 mos., but should plot along or near the same growth curve it's always followed. Strings of babbling at 6 mos. become non-specific " da-da, ma-ma" in 9th mo. Gross motor is good. Screens are on firstsigns.org. Follow-up with pede. & MS Early Intervention Program if concerned. ...Read more

My baby was born with a Head Circumference of 31.75 CM and at 3 month his HC is 36.9 cm. is the growth normal? Please advise and thanks a ton.

Speak to baby's doc: That is a rapid rate of growth in 3 months. The usual rate is 1 cm per month for the first 6 months. Was your baby small for gestational age? This condition can be associated with rapid "catch up growth" In some cases, familial macrocephaly accounts. Speak to your pediatrician and ask to see the head circumference chart, so you can understand what is happening. ...Read more

What does it mean if a baby's head circumference percentile drops from 90 to 75 at 5.5 months? Does it indicate intelligence levels?

Head size: My first thought is technique and is a measuring error. That's the most likely. I would get it measured again and monitor it over the next few weeks to see if it is real or to watch the trend. Premature closure of the soft spot is a possibility which is fixable. Lower IQ would be unlikely. Talk to your doctor and let him know your concern and work together. ...Read more

My baby girl's head circumference only grew by 1cm in 2 MONTHS, From birth (34.5 cm) to 2 months (35.5). Based on the head chart, she's way behind. ?

Head circumference: This does seem like slow growth. Sometimes there is moulding of the scalp which alters the head circumference and sometimes it may be difficult to get an accurate measurement. My 5.5months old baby had hie when born. His head circumference is always in 25th percentile, are there any chances for him to develope microcephaly?

Difficult ?: I assume you mean hypoxia ischemic encephalopathy . If his head circumpherence is 25th% and stays on that curve that is good news for baby. The brain continues to grow and develop for 2 years so it is very hard to know if baby will have damage or not. Baby should be watched carefully and help given if does not develop normally.
