The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. My 5 month old baby is coughing, w congested chest. Wheezing. Sudden onset. No fever yet, . What can I give to ease his discomfort?
Three mth old baby is coughing and very congested is there any cough suyrp she can take, if so how much?
Not really: Cough medications don't work and cause side effects, so they are no longer recommended. She likely has a viral infection, a cold. You could give her tylenol, (acetaminophen) and I would use saline nasal drops followed by suctioning with a blue bulb syringe. Frequently clearing the nose helps a lot, though they don't like it while you're doing it. ...Read more
Is it safe to use a vaporizer on my 1 month baby since he is starting to cough and seems congested?
My 6mo baby caught a cold. He has a cough with flem and is congested. Is there he can take, or anything I can give him?
Just Motrin 4 fever: Poor baby! This is a typical time for babies to start catching illnesses. The antibodies that they are born with from you (maternal antibody) is wearing off right now. If he get's a fever or seems to be in pain, hard to console, then try a dose of motrin for him. 10 mg/kilogram of body weight. I don't recommend ANY otc cold and cough meds, they don't work, and they have many side effects. ...Read more

Ok to give children's sudafed (cough/cold) to a 2.5yr-old if he's 40 lbs? Child is very congested, dr not avail for consultation.
Sudafed: Because it contains Pseudoephedrine which may disrupt your child's sleep, use slt water nose drops with the sid of a bulb syringe to clear his nasal passages. Also use a vaporizer and elevate his mattress while sleeping. If need be you can use clartin, allegra, or zyrtec syrup, 1 tsp at bedtime and may be repeated 12 hours later, if necessary. ...Read more
My infant is congested coughing and has RSV should I get a vaporizer or humidifier? What is the difference
Vapor vs humidity: A humidifier (fan+filter+water) basically returns moisture to the air after the heating system extracts it. Homes up north have it plumbed into their furnace. In texas, less cold means we may need a separate humidifier. A good humidity range is 35-45% while dry heat can drop it below 20% and aggravate a kids cough. I have humidifiers in my office and home with gauges to monitor the level. ...Read more

My 3 week old baby has a congested nose and cough. His doctor only prescribed nasal drops but nothing for the cough. What can I give him?
Nasal wash: At 7 weeks the primary cause of congestion is the environment. House dust, fragrance, perfumes, detergent or cleaning products all leave scents that may not bother you but irritate a babies nose. A good nasal clean out with saline can remove much of this irritant load, but removing the offending irritants from babies life helps more in the long run. Air particle filters can also help. ...Read more

Maybe: Can always follow up with the same doctor if symptoms persist. Pulmonary function testing is warranted and you may also benefit from systemic steroids short term and long term inhaler medication. Need to stop smoking now ...Read more

Infection: A good rule of thumb is that if an upper or lower respiratory infection persists beyond approximately 10 days, it likely has become a bacterial infection. You likely have a lower respiratory infection and need to see your doctor. Antibiotics probably would be helpful. Get seen soon and other supportive therapy will be given to make you feel better. ...Read more
Treat the cause.: Difficult coughs may be triggered by various causes: lung inflammation, wheezing, sinus drainage, and even reflux. The best way to cope with cough is to treat the actual cause: antibiotics for infxn, inhaled steroids, bronchodilators, or even anti-reflux medications. One or more of these may be needed to quell the cough--even better than traditional cough meds. Claritin (loratadine) is for allergy, not cough. ...Read more
No: Nasal congestion is not a reason for oxygen supplementation and it will not improve any symptoms of nasal congestion.
