Another cause for such episodes would be secretions from post nasal drip, especially if the baby has a lot of nasal congestion. Follow up with your babies pediatrician for further evaluation.

My child has a dry cough and it sounds like he is choking. This happens when he is falling asleep. What can I give him.
What should be immediately done when saliva enters the wind pipe and a person is experiencing choking?
Nothing: If the person is coughing, just let the person cough. He/she will be able to clear the saliva from the windpipe. If it is only saliva, the person will eventually clear the windpipe. If the person is really choking, saliva will not be the culprit. There may be something lodged in the windpipe. In such a circumstance, the heimlich maneuver should be done. ...Read more

Past couple months I woke up choking and couldn't breath. During the day I have to force my throat to swallow saliva on and offbut not drinks or food?
Time to see the Dr.: Such symptoms are possibly due to achalasia (or other causes). One can see her primary care doctor, who can refer to a gastroenterology doctor if needed. Chronic cough, night sweats, choking on saliva since Dec. No fever, fatigue, sore throat, or allergies. Xrays, blood work clear in Jan. Ideas? Thanks
If you have not lost weight, it is not an emergent issue and not likely to be serious. However, it would be prudent to consult a pulmonologist- lung doctor for an evaluation.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.

I have been giving my 6 month old 1/2mg loritadine bid x 4.5 days now, and still very congested and can't sleep without choking. Keep going?
Doctor to evaluate: An infant who has "choking" symptoms needs a doctor's evaluation. Loratadine (Claritin) is an over-the-conter allergy medication and is approved for older kids, which means using it in infants may or may not have the desired effects (should be working closely with one's doctor). So, keep going... to the doctor's office, but not necessarily with the loratadine. ...Read more
