Can babies breathe through their mouth if their nose is stopped up while asleep?

Can babies breathe through their mouth if their nose is stopped up while asleep?

Depends on age/posit: In the first 6m the neck is so short the baby must hold the head up & back to drop the jaw & mouth breathe. This is not a natural position so babies seldom sleep well. The growth of the neck by about 2-3 cm over that time allows the head to be neutral with the jaw open. In early infancy the nose must be clear to breathe without a struggle. ...Read more

I can't let my baby cry her self to sleep coz she cries so hard she can hardly breath, what shall I do in such a case, shall i still leave her cry hard?

See her pediatrician: Take along a video of an episode. If she has no congenital heart or lung disease, have a set bedtime & routine: read, rock, wipe out her mouth after her last feed, then put her on her back in her crib in her own room, drowsy, but awake to learn to self-calm for sleep. Doing this between 1-4 mos. Helps her consolidate sleep & avoids " trained night crying" at 6 months & older. ...Read more

My 4 week baby breath so hard when she drinks milk , it all happens while she is drinking during sleep?

My 4 week baby breath so hard when she drinks milk , it all happens while she is drinking during sleep?

Confusing question: Babies depend on their open nasal passages to breathe normally. If baby must stop feeding to do some breathing or seems to work harder to breathe during feedings, she needs her nose cleaned of any mucous or irritant debris. Dust, smoke & fragrances, make it hard for babies & saline nose rinse is your best rx. I don't know of any babies that drink during sleep, but many sound bad if congested. ...Read more

My baby in sleep makes snoring sounds as if he has difficulty breathing r like some blockage. He breathes normal wen not sleeping.Anything to worry?

Maybe. Make a movie.: To show the pediatrician what's happening, the parents can make a movie of the shirtless baby's breathing. Show the face, chest, and tummy at the same time, so the doctor can see how everything moves during breathing. A minute into the movie, open the mouth to show how the breathing changes; and then a minute later, close the mouth to show how the breathing changes again. ...Read more

My 6 week old baby tends to gasp/lose breath while sleeping, what could it be should I be worried? Her provider said it's just baby noises but it's not

Hard to say: In early weeks, babies can go though a transition pattern called periodic breathing. This is the system figuring out how fast/deep to breathe during the varying states.(sleep/rest/feed/active) It can be fast panting or s;ow deep, there can be a short pause up to 10 sec. By 6 weeks this is usually less noticeable, but occasional pauses can remain. If you think your doc is clueless, get a 2nd opinion ...Read more

Get it checked out!: Seek medical help to determine to cause of your snoring. Typically a collapse airway is involved and today, a simple overnight take home sleep test can provide all the information needed to determine if a potentially life threatening, life shortening condition of obstructive sleep apnea may be at play. Do it, it may save your life! ...Read more

THe most: Common cause of anal itching especially if it wakes you from your sleep is caffeine followed by excess perspiration. Do not use witch hazel or baby wipes with lanolin! cut out all caffeine and use corn starch powder on your bottom when getting dressed and whenever you feel dampness or itching in that area. Avoid petroleum based creams of any kind. ...Read more

Homemade saline drop: If your baby can't eat because his nose is so stuffed or if he's working harder to breathe (look at his chest without close on and watch him breath) then you should seek care from your doctor. Saline drops are: 8 ounces of water (1 measuring cup) with 1/2 teaspoon of non-iodized table salt and a pinch of baking soda. Use a fresh batch every time. Only use two drops at a time. ...Read more
