Is it possible to have an unremarkable normal brain MRI for an infant that endured a brain trauma? If it's normal does it rule out brain damage?

Yes and No: First question a definite YES....not only infant...ANYONE....people suffer traumatic brain injuries all the time clinically but have normal MRI's and certainly it is also true that a normal MRI does not rule out brain injury since we cannot see all the possible ways a brain can be injured using MRI. How many minutes does it take for brain damage to occur if a baby isn't breathing?

How many minutes does it take for brain damage to occur if a baby isn't breathing?

It depends: Brain damage does not occur unless there is a significant loss of oxygen and/or other vital nutrients to the brain. Cessation of breathing (apnea) per se does not cause brain damage unless the oxygen level in the blood falls to dangerously low levels for a prolonged period of time. Even if apneic, oxygen levels can be sustained in the blood through other means, for many minutes, or even hours. ...Read more
