Sonogram (Definition)

An ultraound, also known as a sonogram, is a painless and relatively inexpensive imaging test that utilizes sound waves instead of ionizing radiation. There are no side effects. Ultrasound can give us two-dimensional, and in some applications three-dimensional, images of structures and organs in virtually any part of the body. In addition to diagnostic uses, such as evaluating abnormalities in the abdomen, pelvis, and breast, ultrasounds are commonly used to guide needle and catheter placement in a variety of surgical ...Read more

How can one predict baby gender from ultrasound report at 12 weeks?

How can one predict baby gender from ultrasound report at 12 weeks?

Depends on variables: Although the parts may be present it is difficult to be accurate on gender assessment at 12 weeks. In the hands of a skilled tech with a high resolution probe this can sometimes be suggestive. However, it is more reliable around 18-20 wks. Even then, I have seen folks who decorated a nursery based on us have to repaint when baby delivered. ...Read more

At 12 weeks scan the ultrasound technician saw that the baby has penetrated the empty sac of the vanishing twin. How can this be?

At 12 weeks scan the ultrasound technician saw that the baby has penetrated the empty sac of the vanishing twin. How can this be?

Clarification: I would schedule a visit with your doctor to ask for clarification on the sonogram findings. This is such a specific question it requires someone to view the images of the sonogram to be able to interpret the results ...Read more

Went for an ultrasound that measured my baby at 14 weeks 2 days the doctors told me they are using a due date which predicts I'm 12 weeks which is right?

Ultrasound dating: Your ultrasound dating should not be more than 1 week off from your due date at this point in your pregnancy. Assuming this was your first ultrasound you should talk with your doctor about whether or not she wants to change your due date. ...Read more

Is it possible at my first ultrasound at 14 weeks I was really 12 weeks and the baby just measured at 14 weeks. Cant use LMP I didn't have periods (depo?

Is it possible at my first ultrasound at 14 weeks I was really 12 weeks and the baby just measured at 14 weeks. Cant use LMP I didn't have periods (depo?

OB math problem: Any ultrasound or other method of calculating gestational age has a "fudge factor" of plus or minus 2 weeks. So the baby's age is just a "guestimate" by MD parameters until labor starts and the baby shows up on the scene. ...Read more

I recently had a transvaginal ultrasound done & it said I'm 12 weeks & 5 days is it okay that the baby measures 11.3 cm? Is that too big or too small?

I recently had a transvaginal ultrasound done & it said I'm 12 weeks & 5 days is it okay that the baby measures 11.3 cm? Is that too big or too small?

Fine: The ultrasound dating of a pregnancy is based on the fetal measurements so, if the ultrasound dating agrees with your dating based on your last menstrual period, the baby is just the right size. Remember, however, that babies gain most of their weight in the third trimester and that is when you see the greatest difference between large and small babies. Best wishes to you both. ...Read more

Mass identified on ultrasound near intestines low/mid right side of abdomen. What would MRI show vs ultrasound? Had baby 12 weeks ago.

Type and possibly or: An MRI would tell you the tissue type of the mass (muscle, fat, blood or whatever) and also possible origin of the mass (what structure it is coming from). This is valuable information in determining what to do next to see what exactly this may be. ...Read more

I had a 12 week ultrasound doctor didn't say much just that the baby was moving around and had long legs? Is having long legs at 12 weeks normal

Non issue: What about the rest of the study? If the legs are proportionate to other extremities, then no biggie. Movement is good. Maybe the baby will be a big delivery. Follow up with your doctor. It doesn't sound like something to worry about ...Read more

How accurate are ultrasounds at 12 weeks. Is it possible to be twelve weeks pregnant and bby measure at 14 weeks?

How accurate are ultrasounds at 12 weeks. Is it possible to be twelve weeks pregnant and bby measure at 14 weeks?

Very: A technically good scan by a proficient sonographer or physician will be accurate to less than 1 week in the first trimester. If a 12 week scan is technically good and is interpreted correctly, it should not be possible to be off by that much; meaning the ultrasound dates are likely correct. ...Read more

If u have an ultrasound at 12 weeks and it comes back saying u are 12 weeks + 4 days - is that enough of a difference to move up your due date?

If u have an ultrasound at 12 weeks and it comes back saying u are 12 weeks + 4 days - is that enough of a difference to move up your due date?

Depends: It depends on how much different there is from the due date calculated by the first day of the last period. If the difference is less than 7 days, we usually wouldn't change the due date. If more than 7 days, we usually would except in rare situations where we are 100% sure of the conception date. ...Read more

Ultrasound at 12 weeks showed nuchal translucency was 4mm. What does this mean?

Ultrasound at 12 weeks showed nuchal translucency was 4mm. What does this mean?

Nuchal Translucency: Nuchal Translucency is a screening test to determine risk of chromosome abnormalities in a fetus. When the NT is greater than 3.5 mm, there is a 1 in 5 chance of a chromosome abnormality such as Turner or Down syndrome, or Trisomy 18. Additional tests should be ordered by an OB or genetic counselor for confirmation. A mother may decide to continue or end of the pregnancy based on the information. ...Read more

The: The ultrasound dating now is remarkably accurate. There can be discrepancies in the dates that the patient has from the date of menstrual period, but the ultrasound dating is remarkably accurate based on the "crown rump length" of the fetus, which is the measurement of the baby from the crown of the head to the tip of its bottom, the development of the heart, and other vital organ which can already be identified by ultrasound dating. A 12 week ultrasound date should be very accurate. ...Read more

How come ultrasounds done at 6-8 weeks are considered more accurate than 12 weeks?

How come ultrasounds done at 6-8 weeks are considered more accurate than 12 weeks?

Less variability: There is very little difference in size between different 6-8 week embryos. Therefore there is less uncertainty of their ages. The further along the pregnancy gets, the greater the manifestations of individual differences. So a fetus that will be 9 lbs at birth will look bigger than one destined to be 6 lbs. ...Read more

Can an ultrasound mistakenly say your 9 weeks if you think your 12 weeks?

Ultrasound dates: Generally speaking, ultrasound evaluation with reported dates in th 9 week range are accurate to within 4-5 days. Unless you only had sexual intercourse around the 12 week timeframe (or had in-vitro fertilization), the ultrasound dates are more accurate than dates from the patient;s menstrual history. ...Read more

How accurate are ultrasounds at 12 weeks? On march 4 I was told 13w when I should've been 12w based on LMP. She said it could a week off

Fairly accurate: In general when approximating due dates the earlier the ultrasound the better and most accurate, if you had normal periods prior to pregnancy, I would use your due date from you lmp. Further investigation is usually warrent at 12 weeks if your us edc is more than 1.5 weeks difference than the LMP on us at 12 weeks, good luck ...Read more

Are ultrasounds accurate at dating conception at 12 weeks?

Are ultrasounds accurate at dating conception at 12 weeks?

Much more than: Later in gestation. First trimester ultrasound is most accurate at estimating gestational age within 5-7 days (depends on the center). It trails off after that. General rule: 2nd trimester scans for dating are +/- 14 days and 3rd trimester is the least accurate (+/-21 days). ...Read more
