My formula fed foster baby has realy dark green almost black poop and its really runny..Is this normal ? Also he was a drug and alcohol exposed baby
Yes: Dark green/almost black stools are indeed normal color for some infants. If the stools are totally black, ask doc to check for hidden blood. But just very dark green are okay, as are the various yellow, greens, oranges and browns. Bad color is pure white, totally black, or red bloody. Not normal: Black stools are not normal. While rarely a dietary cause may be found, most often black stools signify blood in the stools, blood that is coming from a little bit higher up in the GI tract. Probably not: Most of the time black stool is not of concern. Lots of things can make stool black - iron pills, pepto bismal, etc. So unless it continues, don't worry. However, bleeding from the upper intestinal track - ulcers, polyps, inflammation does turn stool black. So, if it continues and you are not on iron post-delivery, do see a doctor.
