Not A Panacea: It will only definitely treat something that results from its deficiency, like many problems of nerves. But it is used in just about every cell in the body as a cofactor and may indirectly affect a lot of metabolic processes. It's been touted for problems from restless legs to a cream for eczema and a sublingual pill for canker sores. I'll bet they come up with a B12 enema soon. ...Read more

How long do the cognitive and neurological symptoms of B12 deficiency take to heal after correction?
Depends on: Your age, how long you've had low B12 and how low it got. I usually try to keep the level above 450 for the first year and above 350 thereafter. In older people we tend to see incomplete recovery. Balance if impaired with eyes closed should start to improve with 6-9 months of therapy. Cognitive slowing can improve sooner. Some people report improved thinking within a week. ...Read more

Can you clarify?: B12 deficiency can cause all sorts of neurological symptoms including problems with memory and focus; and so can a head injury. But severe B12 deficiency will also cause many other problems not associated with head trauma, including things like anemia or peripheral nerve issues. ...Read more

So, do try to improve your diet and even supplement nutrients that are hard to get enough of. See a professional for ocd treatment too. ...Read more

Required by nerves: This co-factor is needed by the nerves to stay healthy. Each nerve cell has a self repair system that relies on a variety of nutrients in our diet to provide the needed material to keep the walls intact and the cell working. Lack of B12 eventually causes that repair system to start breaking down and nerve cells malfunction or degenerate, leading to neurologic symptoms. ...Read more
It depends...: This depends on the cause of the deficiency. If it's due to a lack of B12 in your diet (b12 is primarily found in animal-derived foods) then taking a multivit. With B12 will help. However, many cases of B12 deficiency are caused by difficulty absorbing it, a condition called pernicious anemia. In that case, oral B12 won't help & you need injections &/or sublingual b12, ideally as methylcobalamin. ...Read more

As a matter of fact yes: I cannot go into the complex details, but I had two young patient's years ago, both of whom had elevated blood levels of vitamin B12. But both of them also had evidence of thiamin deficiency that would result in deficiency of energy. I concluded that vitamin B12 was collecting in the blood and not being used in metabolism. Try a supplement of thiamin and see whether the vitamin B12 levels come down. ...Read more
