Is it safe to take sulfasalazine while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Is it safe to take sulfasalazine while pregnant or breastfeeding?

Probably, but ask OB: Adverse events have not been observed in animal reproduction studies. Sulfasalazine and sulfapyridine cross the placenta; a potential for kernicterus in the newborn exists. Based on available data, an increase in malformations in the developing fetus has not been observed following maternal use of sulfasalazine.
