Is it possible 500 mg of azithromycin will treat chlamydia? What is the likelihood that this is enough? I do not have access to 1g. I have no symtoms

Is it possible 500 mg of azithromycin will treat chlamydia? What is the likelihood that this is enough? I do not have access to 1g. I have no symtoms

Not enough: This dose is not reliable against chlamydia. You need to find another 500 mg; in fact, if you already treated yourself, you need another two doses -- total 1 g taken all at once. If you could get 500 mg, surely you can get the rest. Contact your local health department for probable free treatment. Also, you need to be tested; and other sex partners (all within the past 2 months) also need Rx. ...Read more

My girlfriend was prescribed azithromycin to treat chlamydia & on the 5th day after, we had intercourse for 60 secs. Is there any type of risk?

Maybe: The typical treatment is given in a single dose or over 2 wks. It does take a while to kill the germ. If you had prior exposure and were not treated, you likely have it anyway.Condoms help you avoid some risk but is not 100%. In this situation it is hard to say if you are at risk or not. There are other details we don't know from what you listed. ...Read more

Hi doctor, after taking azithromycin to treat chlamydia. When should I get tested again to make sure it's out of my system?

Hi doctor, after taking azithromycin to treat chlamydia. When should I get tested again to make sure it's out of my system?

1-3 months: The standard recommendation is to restest for chlamydia (and gonorrhea) about 3 months after treatment. This detects both reinfection, in case of reexposure, and also the rare treatment failure. Earlier testing usually isn't done, but if reassurance needed, you can retest at 1 month. But not before that: any earlier and the test can still be positive from the initial infection, even though cured. ...Read more

Don't share meds!: Your question's incomplete, so I'm not sure what you're asking. But I suspect you want to share prescription meds with your boyfriend. I would NOT encourage you to do so. How do you know he "needs" Azithro? More than you? If he does need it, he should see a physician. Azithro may not be the best treatment med for his condition. Ok if both treated: As long as both of you were treated, it's safe to have sex. Be sure to go back for retesting in about 3 months. The rate of reinfection at age 20 is about 20%. This means that 1 out of every 5 women will be positive again when rechecked in 3 months. ...Read more
