Azithromycin (Definition)

Azithromycin (zithromax, azithrocin, zmax, azin)[1] is an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics. Azithromycin is one of the world's best-selling antibiotics.[2][not in citation given (see discussion.)] it is derived from erythromycin, with a methyl-substituted nitrogen atom incorporated into the lactone ring, thus making ...Read more

How long does it take for suprax (cefixime) and azithromycin take to clear gonerrhea? A

Not long at all but: Not long at all but the damage that Gonorrhea can cause reproductive tract could linger...indefinitely. Some doctors advise a repeat test (test of cure) about 3 weeks after treatment to be sure it's cleared. Infection doesn't make you immune to repeat infection, so be extra careful protecting yourself against re-infection. Condoms, partner testing and "monogamy "are your best defenses. Wishing u well! I have gonorreah, i have been advised to take cefixime and azithromycin together. So should I take all 8 pills together? 4x100mg cef and 4x250mg azith

Doesn't matter much: It makes no difference in curing your gonorrhea, but taking the drugs together might cause stomach upset. OK to take together; or take the cefixime, wait an hour or two, then the azithromycin. You may still get some abdominal cramps or nausea from the azithromycin, but it's usually brief and not severe. Good luck. ...Read more

Burning sensation after using loo and urine after finishing a course of. Suprax (cefixime) and azithromycin for 10 days?

Urethritis: Azithromycin and Cefixime (suprax) are useful antibiotics, but not the right ones for treating the usual bacteria that cause a urinary tract infection. If you continue to experience irritation/pain during urination see a doctor for a prescription of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. ...Read more

Took azithromycin 2.5 g and cefixime 800 mg daily for 3 days on April 18,19,20. Possible re-exposure to STI on May 1 -enough zithro still in body?

Don't count on it: We usually expect treatment levels of the drug to persist for a week or so, enough to kill off the initial infection. Any re-exposure 10 or more days later is worrisome, and you may not have enough to protect you. Time to get re-tested. In the future, use a condom. It is not 100% protective but can help some. ...Read more

My doctor prescribed me 400 mg single dose cefixime and 1 g azithromycin single dose 2 weeks apart for a suspected pid. Is this effective?

Maybe not: The Azithromycin will treat chlamydia. Cefixime is no longer recommended for treatment of gonorrhea in the U.S. Because of drug resistance. The recommended treatment here is with a 250 mg injection of ceftriaxone. ...Read more

My widal test rept-to + upto 1:80, th + upto 1:160, ah upto 1:80, bh + upto 1:40, my doc says it is typhoid and prescribed cefixime and azithromycin, isok?

Widal: This test measures antibodies that may take up to 2 weeks or more to form in active disease, making its use in acute infection limited. In addition, the cross reactivity of the test makes its use questionable absent a full assessment of the clinical situation and appropriate culture of blood and urine. Since typhoid is uncommon in the us need to know where else you have been (punjab?). ...Read more

My GF is being treated for Chlamydia 1x 1000mg Azithromycin and 1x 800mg Cefixime. It's been a week she has a fever and intense pain, is this normal?

My GF is being treated for Chlamydia 1x 1000mg Azithromycin and 1x 800mg Cefixime. It's been a week she has a fever and intense pain, is this normal?

Not normal. PID?: If her pain is in the lower abdomen, probably she has pelvic inflammatory disease (PID, fallopian tube infection). The treatment she had is fine for uncomplicated chlamydia (and/or gonorrhea), but not sufficient for PID. She should contact her doctor immediately, or go to an urgent care clinic or emergincy room. This could be serious. Good luck! ...Read more

Is 1g of azithromycin and 400 mg of cefixime good against gonorrhea? Tried doxy+cipro already and it didn't work. I'm in Thailand, allergic penicilin

Is 1g of azithromycin and 400 mg of cefixime good against gonorrhea? Tried doxy+cipro already and it didn't work. I'm in Thailand, allergic penicilin

Should be OK: Gonorrhea bacteria in SE Asia, including Thailand, often are resistant to both ciprofloxacin and doxycycline, so no surprise they didn't work. Cefixime and azithromycin should be OK, but the best option would have been a shot of ceftriaxone 250 mg instead of cefixime. You should be retested in 2-3 weeks to be sure it's gone; if not, see an STD expert and discuss ceftriaxone. Good luck. ...Read more

Was tested with GO in Sept. Prescribed 2x Cefixime 200mg and 1 x Zithromax 500mg. In Dec, still tested +tive. Is it too late to take 1g of Zith now?

This requires: Careful management. It most cases, a positive test 3 months after treatment represents a new infection rather than a treatment failure. It is unfortunate that you only took 1/2 of the recommended azithromycin (Zithromax) dose. NOW, you need to be recultured and wait for drug susceptibility testing to make sure you are treated with the appropriate antibiotics. Work carefully with your doctor. ...Read more

Was tested with GO in Sept. Prescribed 2x Cefixime 200mg & 2x Zithromax 500mg. In Dec, still tested +tive. Can i still take them at an increased dose?

Go to ID doctor: Persistent infection after treatment may be due to reinfection or resistance/treatment failure. Make sure parter(s) are treated. If the cultures for gonococcus are positive, isolates should be submitted for resistance testing. Advise IM ceftriaxone plus high dose oral Azithromycin. Gemifloxacin or IM gentamicin if resistance to cephalosporins is suspected. Retest 14 days after retreatment. ...Read more

In treating chlamydia and gonorrhea is it okay to take the cefixime one day and then azythromicin the next or does it need to be taken the same time?

Best together but...: ...cefixime is no longer recommended as the first choice for gonorrhea. It should be ceftriaxone (injection) plus azithromycin. Discuss with the doctor or clinic treating you. The drugs best taken together, although probably will work fine if taken 12-24 hours apart. Definitely no longer than that. But why not just do it right? They are well tolerated together, with no increased side effects. ...Read more
