Are the artificial colours in junk food linked to cancer?

Are the artificial colours in junk food linked to cancer?

Not any more: I don't like them either, but each dye gets a thorough going-over as a possible mutagen (the only thing likely to cause cancer apart from preposterously high doses) using the ames test. By 1988, all the apparent mutagens were gone; since then, i've only seen claims of dye mutagens in food (which any good scientist would grab up in a minute) in marginal journals. ...Read more

Are diet sodas and other products with artificial sweeteners safe to consume while pregnant?

Are diet sodas and other products with artificial sweeteners safe to consume while pregnant?

Yes: The american academy of pediatrics' committee on nutrition appointed a task force to investigate this question, and they concluded that all the currently available artificial sweeteners are safe during pregnancy. The fda recommends that pregnant women limit aspartame consumption to "moderate levels"-- which is actually a lot more than you would think (roughly 10 cans of diet soda daily). ...Read more

Are fake sugar products bad in diet soft drinks?

Are fake sugar products bad in diet soft drinks?

Good question: The research (vs. The hype and the internet rumors) are a muddled mess right now. So far as i can tell: there is no current good evidence sweeteners cause cancer, but there are a handful of people who do not tolerate these fake sugars. There is some concern the 'sweet' taste nevertheless triggers things to make them no less bad for health in general. ...Read more

Why are carcinogens allowed in our food, beverages, water and hygiene products?

Many reasons: Carcinogens may be naturally occurring, or man-made. They are ubiquitous in our environment and cannot be completely avoided. Can i use pure fruit juice/juice concentrate to sweeten dishes so as to avoid bad effect of sugar? Is the fructose, glucose in fruit better than sucrose

Can i use pure fruit juice/juice concentrate to sweeten dishes so as to avoid bad effect of sugar? Is the fructose, glucose in fruit better than sucrose

Not really...: Sugar is sugar. That's why people who are avoiding sugar should not drink fruit juice. They are usually ok with eating small servings of fruit. Processed foods from the store that say "naturally sweetened with juice" and use grape juice (or another juice) are bad like products using sucrose. The best thing to do is to train oneself to enjoy unsweetened or only slightly sweetened foods and drinks. ...Read more

Also, there was no increase in insulin levels, unlike with aspartame, which is important regarding the issue of insulin resistance. Hope that helps. ...Read more

Is it healthier to eat junk foods (eg. fried foods, potato chips, candy) occasionally or avoid them altogether?

Agree w' : Dr Fairchild. Many of the junk foods however contain ingredients that are addictive (corn syrup). For some people, when they eat a little they can't stop or they will eat more the next day and the cravings will continue. If once you take a little, you have trouble stopping or find that within a few days you are taking a little more, try to stay clear you may be addicted to something in the junk. ...Read more

Caffeine shares many of the same propeties, but it's relativelly weaker and short-acting. ...Read more
