48 yrs old. Max heart rate on slow (65 mins) 5 mile run =230. Average HR =182. Training watch says 0% of run is at appropriate rate for my age. OK?
How do you feel?: There is no rule that says it can't go that fast, but it's more than expected. It's possible your monitor is "double counting" the beats, which is not uncommon because it misinterprets the electrical impulse of your heart. Do you have a fast heart rate at rest? HR can be variable: When resting, normal hrs are 60-80 beats per minute. But younger and healthy people can often have hr below 60 as slow as in the 40s. Lance armstrong was known for having his hr in the 30s. When under stress or exercising the hr can accelerate to over 100bpm and much more if needed. Decinditioned or OSA : I suspect that you are at the very least, out of shape, but you may have sleep apnea. I see pts of your size w/ similar heart rate ranges and are found w/ sleep apnea. If you have sx of fatigue, headaches, shortness of breath or chest pain, sleep apnea is more likely than deconditioning. I suggest speaking to ur PCP about having a sleep study. Kinda sorta but no: I used http://tools.acc.org/ASCVD-Risk-Estimator/ to calculate risk. There's calculated 10yr risk & optimized 10yr risk. Latter based upon following: "Total cholesterol of 170 mg/dL, HDL-cholesterol of 50 mg/dL, Systolic BP of 110 mm Hg, Not taking medications for hypertension, Not a diabetic, Not a smoker" So if you can achieve better numbers than these, yes, you improve but zero risk?
