130-170 pounds.: By BMI calculations, your weight should be in the 130-170 range to be considered healthy. Granted the BMI is not an ideal index as it doesn't take into account body composition (muscle versus fat) or coincident medical conditions. But that would be your range strictly based on your height. ...Read more
Depends on height: Hi. BMI is a measure of body habitus that is calculated using your height and weight. It does not take age (in adults) into account. So 20 years old doesn't matter. Height, however, is indispensable in calculating BMI. Therefore, in the absence of critically important information, we have no way to tell you what an average BMI for (20 yo) women is. What is the I deal weight for a 5ft 5 Australian female aged 22 years old? Is BMI a good measure to rely on?
Can't tell, but...: A starting point is 130 lbs. A lot depends on a person's body build. Some are naturally very thin, others thick or big-boned, but most people are somewhere in between. "Australian" is a location, so that doesn't help either, as many different types of bodies are in Australia. BMI is helpful if a person is of average musculature. If very muscular, a perfectly fine person will have a high BMI. ...Read more

Cycles regular?: If your cycles are regular, there is no reason to think there is problem. Most women have a 28 day cycle, and they ovulate on cycle day 1 (cycle day 1 is the first day of your period). The most fertile time is a day or two before ovulation, and there if usually a thin, egg white mucous discharge. If your cycles are irregular, you need to be evaluated. ...Read more
Limitations of BMI: The calculation is the same. Men tend to be taller, which to some extent offsets the greater weight due to muscle. The bmi is not the be-all end-all of body fat measurements. It is a useful index for most people, and in large populations, but individual people can be muscular, stocky, and otherwise have low body fat but still a high bmi. ...Read more

Still, your goal is obviously to grow bigger, stronger muscles, not to drop weight. I advise you to be sure you are getting in 80 grams of complete protein daily and at least 14 grams within 1 hr of lifting weight. ...Read more

Do you think the BMI chart for women in America is too lenient? Is it okay to go lower than the 18.5 BMI if I still have excess body fat?
BMI: A BMI of 18.5 is low, but the measurement has limitations. It is only weight/height (2) so people that are short/tall/chunky/small boned can all skew the numbers. Presumably you are over age 18, and not suffering from anorexia nervosa. Are you menstruating? You feel that you still have excess body fat. Suggest you let your physician help you with this determination. ...Read more
Need to delay?: There are variations of crunches and a host of exercises that can strengthen the abdominal muscles. If one is looking for exercises for only the rectus abdominis, then a pt or physiatrist can help if that person has a particular condition. If one is looking for permission to exercise, the primary care physician can begin an evaluation for suitability and safety of fitness programs. I'd start there. ...Read more
