80 yr old mom on ESRF dialysis 4 times a week and DIABETIC AND CHF was given augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) she is having stomach pain could augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) make her feel worse ?
It can.: Any antibiotic including Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) can cause stomach discomfort. Taking with food can limit this side effect. If your mother is developing diarrhea, though, it would be best to contact and update the prescribing physician. Antibiotics can sometimes lead to a certain bacterial colitis that would need to be treated with different antibiotics. Good luck! ...Read more
No: Both antibiotics are effective bactericidal drugs. Keflex causes time dependent killing while Cipro (ciprofloxacin) causes concentration dependent killing. The 2 drugs have different antibacterial spectrums. In general Cipro (ciprofloxacin) has better activity against gram negative bacteria like pseudomonas while Keflex is moe active against gram positive bacteria like staph. And strep. 7 months of bladder infections. Taken k flex, amoxicillin, penicillin, bactrim, (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) now on Macrobid for 17 days CAT scan x rays ultrasound normal help?
Too many; c a Urolog: At your age, I think that's too many bladder infections. Something underlies these recurrent infections: something that antibiotics alone can't fix. While the CT scan & imaging test show that u (or some1) is concerned, they r the wrong tests. What u need is a cystoscopy by a Urologist (looking @bladder with a scope). If it's neg, a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) wd be the type of CT scan to get. ...Read more
Can I take amoxicillin 250 and augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 375 instead of augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 625 mg ?
Not the same: Since we have no idea why you would be taking the meds, we can not comment on whether this would be appropriate. These meds are not the same. Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 625 has a specific amount of clavulanate that is paired with the amoxicillin, and they work as a team. Your substitution is not equivalent. ...Read more
Yes.: The killing pattern of antibiotics are determined by the mechanism of action. Some of us believe in the area under the curve such that a higher does at one time and slowly metabolized kills the organisms as they reach the maximum of activity. I am one who believes that b-lactams work better with constant exposure of the organisms cell walls so i give it more dosing a day. That is dependent of md. ...Read more
Took amoxicillin 875 mg 3 tid for 6 days then dr changed to augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 875 mg 2 time/day for 5 days and Medrol dose pak. Can these cause constipation?
Not likely . . .: Antibiotics typically lead to diarrhea rather than constipation as they tend to alter the balance of gut bacteria. Clostridium difficile colitis is a classic response. Augment is also well known for causing diarrhea, much more so than just plain amoxicillin. If you've noticed constipation, look for changes in diet, hydration, activity, etc. Also meds like Diphenhydramine can cause constipation. ...Read more
My 74 year old father started on augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 875mg dose today to treat a severe sinus infection. He threw up one hour later. Should he continue the med?
Try one more dose: Some people cannot tolerate certain antibiotics. If he is unable to keep down his second dose, the prescribing clinician needs to be informed immediately so he/ she can decide what to do. If he can't keep it down, it is not treating his infection. ...Read more
Husband accidentally took two doses of his augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) within 4 hours.. Is that dangerous?
19 month female. Diagnosed with infection left ear / left lower lung. Tx: augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) duo 2ml BD started Wed am. Fever back up on Fri night? Thanks!
Mgt: If the infection is bacterial, there should be no fever greater than 101 by day 2 of 3 of the antibiotic course. I would wait another day before contacting your PCP. If there is any respiratory distress, an ED visit is suggested. A follow up virtual appt can be made online: Healthtap.com/DosanjhMD Code: NCYHPZ ...Read more
