Augmentin: I am unaware of urinary frequency being a side effect of augmentin. Perhaps your infection itself, especially if slight feverishness is present, or increased fluid intake is responsible. Your pharmacist can be helpful in answering any questions about your medications. ...Read more

Azithromycin (Definition)

Azithromycin (zithromax, azithrocin, zmax, azin)[1] is an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics. Azithromycin is one of the world's best-selling antibiotics.[2][not in citation given (see discussion.)] it is derived from erythromycin, with a methyl-substituted nitrogen atom incorporated into the lactone ring, thus making ...Read more

Same dosage as adult of azithromycin in pneumonia for a 6 year old weight 25 kg and also add 375 mg augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 3x1? is there a risk of over dosage?

Same dosage as adult of azithromycin in pneumonia for a 6 year old weight 25 kg and also add 375 mg augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 3x1? is there a risk of over dosage?

Dose based on weight: In pediatrics, med dosing is usually based on weight. For a simple pneumonia, the Azithromycin dose for 25 kg child would be half the adult dose: 250 mg for 1 day, then by 125 mg daily for 4 more days. Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) dosing would also depend on weight and the specific illness being treated. Those 2 medications act differently and don't interact--as long as each dose is appropriate, you should be ok. ...Read more

OD on antibiotics: There have been recent reports to suggest that for community acquired pneumonia, a single primary line of antibiotics such as Amoxicillin is sufficient. Azithromycin, preferred for its shorter duration has limited efficacy. Adding Augmentin, (amoxicillin and clavulanate) which has another chemical added to Amoxicillin, to another antibiotic is thus not generally advised, unless your doctor determines resistance or other causes ...Read more

I have given my son two antibiotics, Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 7.5mls, and after 5hrs I gave azithromycin 5mls. 4yrs with severe Tonsilitis how dangerous is this?

Tonsillitis: Why did your pediatrician prescribe two antibiotics? This is not typical or advised. Do not over does the child. Call your doctor and clarify this. For typical strep or staph tonsillitis, 7-10 days of Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) every 12 to 8 hrs depending on the dose is enough. I don't see any benefit to adding Zithromax. Over use of antibiotics is harmful in the short and long run. ...Read more

Had a sinus/ear infection since 5/23. Was given azithromycin & augmentin, neither drug was effective. I am taking ceftin, (cefuroxime) is this more effective?

Sinusitis: Hello, you are being treated in an appropriate pathway. Personally, I recommend a quinolone antibiotic such as Levaquin (levofloxacin) or Avelox after failing the previous two antibiotics. I also add a steroid by mouth to this regimen. Allergy testing may be helpful. You have had ear infections as well. Finally a ct scan of your sinuses would help, especially if you fail another abx. Good luck. ...Read more

Antibiotics: There are substantial risks to taking antibiotics, including Clostridium difficile colitis. I have a kidney infection with bad back pain. Am on augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) duo forte. How long before I get some relief?

Probably just...: If antibiotics is effective, patient will feel better in irritative voiding and backache with 2-3 days after its use. But, unfortunately, many patients being given antibiotics for backache with no real proof of uti. So, check with an expert if you indeed have kidney infection by taking a good history and examining a correctly-collected urine specimen.

Best luck. .. ...Read more

Mgt: If the infection is bacterial, there should be no fever greater than 101 by day 2 of 3 of the antibiotic course. I would wait another day before contacting your PCP.

Augmentin: I was wondering if it is good for dry cough?

I took augmentin 625 mg for 7 days for a uti, was not effective....what would you recommend?

Resistance suspected: Some germs 'don't respond' to an empiric course of antibiotics. You need proper evaluation with a urinary culture. That will give a 'road map' for what antibiotics can be used... Sometimes there's more to a male UTI compared to a female urinary infection. The anatomy is different (of course) and there could be other factors. If your primary doc can't handle it, you may need a urologist. ...Read more

I have been taking augmentin twice a day for six days now (875 mg). Tomorrow morning (10am) is my last dose. Can I have a few beers tomorrow night?

OK in moderation: Contrary to common belief, alcohol in moderation does not interfere with antibiotics. You needn't have avoided beer or other alcohol because of this treatment and certainly can safely have 3-4 beers at this time. Just don't overdo it -- heavy alcohol can impair the immune system's ability to fight infections. ...Read more

Take Meds until gone: To improve elimination of germs. Disinfectant common areas in the house, esp. Faucets and toilets. Use separate eating utensils, do frequent hand washing, avoid kissing or hand to mouth contact. Get new tooth brush. Strep is not as contagious as most viruses where a simple sneeze can linger in the air, but strep can remain viable on surfaces over 24 h from mouth to hand to contact. ...Read more
