Please describe the medication: augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate)?

Antibiotic: Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is a combination antibiotic, specifically a mix of Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin, as you might guess, is in the penicillin family. Clavulanic acid is a medication that works by inhibiting an enzyme called "penicillinase" or "beta-lactamase" that some bacteria produce that destroys penicillin-related drugs. So, clavulonic acid makes Amoxicillin work better in these bacteria. ...Read more

Can I take doxcycline and augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) together, I already started the first med. I was prescribe both by two different doctors for two different issues.

Maybe: These two antibiotics can be taken together but you should let each of the two doctors know what the other has prescribed. It may be necessary to only take one. These broad spectrum antibiotics may create numerous complications with secondary infections. Be careful. Discuss with the doctors. I doubt both are necessary. ...Read more

I am 38 years old with collitis and use augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) due to sinusitis. At the 4th day I had severe diarrhea (5-6 times in the morning). What to do?

Ccommon side effect: Diarrhea is a common side effect of augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate). The frequency that you describe however is severe enough to warrant at least temporary discontinuation of the antibiotic for a day or two. If diarrhea is accompanied by severe cramping or evidence of blood in stool seek immediate medical attention. Concurrent use of probiotics or yogurt can help reduce risk of diarrhea with antibiotics. ...Read more

I have chronic sinus infections. A CT scan shows the roots of my molars growing into my sinuses. Amoxicillin works better than augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate).Ok to use this?

Roots in Sinuses: Ct scans often show tooth roots up in the floor of the maxillary sinuses. This is why sinus infections often cause tooth symptoms. Amoxicillin and Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) are two similar, commonly used antibiotics to help treat sinus infections. ...Read more

I have given my son two antibiotics, Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) 7.5mls, and after 5hrs I gave azithromycin 5mls. 4yrs with severe Tonsilitis how dangerous is this?

Tonsillitis: Why did your pediatrician prescribe two antibiotics? This is not typical or advised. Do not over does the child. Call your doctor and clarify this. For typical strep or staph tonsillitis, 7-10 days of Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) every 12 to 8 hrs depending on the dose is enough. I don't see any benefit to adding Zithromax. Over use of antibiotics is harmful in the short and long run. ...Read more
