Atrial Septal Aneurysm Stroke
With an intra atrial septal aneurysm and an asd what are the chances of an embolism or stroke? What is an embolism?
Http://circ. Ahajournals. Org/content/91/11/2785.full
The link above gives good information on risk and diagnosis of Atrial Septal Aneurysm. The big issue is when blood flow across the septum. Clots from the legs are usually stopped in the lungs. With a ASD, the clot will cross over and go up to the brain can cause stroke.
An embolism is when a clot travels in the blood and causes a blockage. ...Read more
The atrial septum devides the right atrium (upper heart chamber) from the left. During developement in the womb, there is a large opening in this wall which closes soon after birth. The closure can be floppy or redundent, and may be referred to as aneurysm. This is benign and not the type of aneurysm that needs repair or is ...Read more
I was diagnosed with a small PFO and atrial septal aneurysm. My heart is racing and palpitating since. Could I have a stroke or heart attack? Scared!!
With a PFO and: Atrial aneurysm there is the potential for a paradoxical stroke or heart attack but the odds are extremely small. You've had this your whole life and made it 28 years without issue so it is unlikely to occur immediately upon diagnosis. Your health care providers will manage this appropriately and in a timely fashion. ...Read more
Is an atrial septal aneurysm always something your born with and if not how do they determine if you were or was causes by something?
Is an atrial septal aneurysm dangerous or life threatening? Is an Effraction of 50-55% bad? Effraction changed from 65 to 50-55 within a yr. Is it bad
Atrial septal aneury:
Ejection fraction 50-55% is normal and the change from 65% to 55% may well be within the variation of the measuring technology. Atrial septal aneurysm is generally not per se dangerous or life threatening though it can cause problems. Read this for more info:

Floppy septum: The atrial septum devides the right atrium (upper heart chamber) from the left. During developement in the womb, there is a large opening in this wall which closes soon after birth. The closure can be floppy or redundent, and may be referred to as aneurysm. This is benign and not the type of aneurysm that needs repair or is at risk to rupture. ...Read more
Not a true aneurysm: Atrial septal aneurysms are not "true" aneurysm like those that occur in blood vessels with a risk of rupture. Atrial septal aneurysms are simply an excess of tissue left over when you naturally closed your patent foramen ovale with tissue growing together to seal the atrial septum. There is debate about the significance of an atrial septal aneurysm among experts, but they do not cause pain. ...Read more
I have an atrial septal aneurysm and now I know it has a hole they will do a tee how big does it need to be before they will need to patch it?
Depends on flow: It is not just the size. If the shunting between the two sides results in ratio greater than 1.5 and you have symptoms you need the defect closed. Occasionally people get rhythm problems or thrombus formation due to atrial septal aneurysm and may need surgical treatment. ...Read more

Can a small Asd with left to right shunt be dangerous? Is shunting bad? Does it need repaired if small. Also have atrial septal aneurysm
ASD: If it is small and heart is not enlarged most physicians do not recommend closing an ASD. ...Read more
I have an Asd with left to right shunt and an atrial septal aneurysm. Do these shunts start as right to left then as get worse become left to right?
Usually starts L-->R: At birth the left side has higher pressures than the RT side. Thus flow is mainly L-->R. If the ASD is small it may close on its own but if not tends not to cause a problem. If it is large the flow L-->R increases volume load on the Right leading to increased RT pressure, this will reverse the net flow to Rt-->Lft. If large it should be closed before development of increase RT pressures. ...Read more
Atrial septal aneurysm can they rupture? Are they dangerous. Echo done 4 yrs ago just leakyvalves. Had baby BP went up echo shows small hole & aneursym
I got 5 kids 2 yrs ago found I have atrial septal aneurysm & asd. Will it b dangerous to have another baby? Could it kill me. No prob other deliveries
I have been diagnosed with atrial septal aneurysm and now know there is a PFO after having a bubble study done only a few bubbles seen. Should I worry?
Possibly: You maybe at increased risk of stroke. Patients who develop strokes of unknown cause (cryptogenic) have a high probability of having a pfo/aneurysm. Stroke prevention may include medications such as aspirin plavix (clopidogrel) or warfarin. Consultation with a cardiologist who can visualize your echo films or possibly do a TEE can guide you further. ...Read more
After echo and stress test I was diagnosed with atrial septal aneurysm and small pfo. Dr doesn't want to treat. I'm so scared, am I at risk? 28yo F
Is an intra atrial septal aneurysm along with an ASD or Pfo dangerous? Can this aneurysm rupture?
No not rutpure, but: Aneurysmal interatrial septum refers to the 1cm billowing of the interatrial septum around a vertical axis. The risk with a PFO or ASD, is that of thromboembolism and potential stroke. Refer to research work by S. Homma from Columbia University, NY who initially suggested a link between cryptogenic stroke and PFO. Consider antiplatet therapy, before closure device, if possible. ...Read more
Can my cardio determine the size of my Atrial Septal Aneurysm from a regular echo? Doing bubble study to rule out PFO. He says no need for TEE. :-/
Echo for PFO: An echo is done with the ultrasound probe on the chest wall. The quality of the image depends on the "window" between your ribs. It is usually not easy to see the atrial septum well. Transesophageal echo (TEE) with the probe in the esophagus gives much more detailed images. One question, though, is whether TEE would change anything about plans for your treatment. Can having an atrial septal aneurysm with a hole in it cause brain aneurysms which I have 3. Also is it safe for me to donate plasma?
Possibly: I cannot answer the plasma question but if you have an atrial septal defect then yes, any infected blood clots or material that gets into your veins could get around your lungs and cause it a brain aneurysm (paradoxical embolization). This should be discussed with your cardiologist to see if an atrial septal occluder device is needed. ...Read more
Yearly echos to check heart. Have a pfo with atrial septal aneurysm. EA ratio was 1.01 on paper, normal range says (1.1-2.1). Dr didn't mention. Bad?
On 81mg aspirin after PFO and atrial septal aneurysm diagnosis. Is coated or un coated better? Am I still at risk while on this? So tired of worrying.
Pfo: It really does not matter whether a coated or uncoated aspirin is used. The aspirin is used for prevention in low risk patients and you should ask the prescribing physician why he is using this form of prevention ...Read more
I have atrial septal aneurysm-protrusion 6 mm beyond the plane and a base width 10mm. Ecg showed incomplete right bundle branch block. Is this dangeros?
Maybe: Every ASD does not need to be repaired. However this one is moderately large. You are 24 with a long life ahead of you. Echocardiograms and other tests will inform your cardiologist about your best choice forward. Also how healthy and athletic you are will help inform the decision. The RBBB is benign and unimportant in my opinion and compatible with a normal life span ...Read more
Is a sodium level of 134 low? I have an atrial septa defect & atrial septal aneurysm could it be heart failure? I also had fatty liver but don't now
Normal lower limit of serum sodium is 135, so 134 is technically low but it will not do you any harm. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low fat milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form.
