Doctor insights on: Atorvastatin vs simvastatin
Atorvastatin has the brand name lipitor (atorvastatin).. Its function is to lower the body's production of cholesterol and to stabilize current cholesterol plaques. The general name for this class of medication is "statins". Other statins include Crestor (rosuvastatin) ...Read more
Lipitor (atorvastatin) v Zocor: Both are effective "statins" to lower cholesterol. Atorvastatin is more effective and less toxic than simvastatin, but neither is as effective as Crestor (rosuvastatin). For 95 % of people, with proper diet/exercise neither is necessary to reach a nonhdl cholesterol of 90 (subtract good = HDL fom total cholesterol = non hdl) = where coronary artery disease ceases. See www. Thepmc. Org website. ...Read more
Statins: The milligram for milligram potency of Lipitor (atorvastatin) is higher than that for simvastatin. There is some difference in the incidence of side effects but clinically these are not seen very often. Since Lipitor (atorvastatin) became generic it has become more popular. Rosuvastatin (crestor) not generic so expensive has become very popular tho' why given its cost/pill relative to the others is debatable. ...Read more
Very similar: Atorvastatin (lipitor) is a little more potent, milligram for milligram than Simvastatin (zocor). Both have good outcome data. Both are safe. But either can cause muscle aches (in up to 10% of people) which is dependent on the dose. If muscle aches occur, a lower dose should be tried. ...Read more
Dr switched me back to 40mg simvastatin after taking 20mg lipitor (atorvastatin). Should I get off the Lipitor (atorvastatin) for a few days before starting simvastatin?
Not necessary: Simvastatin 40mg is similar in potency to 20mg of lipitor (atorvastatin). There is no need to stop Lipitor (atorvastatin) for a few days before starting Simvastatin as they are similar drugs (both are statins). The Simvastatin can be started the day after stopping the Lipitor (atorvastatin) -- for most efficacy, take a statin at bedtime. ...Read more
I have a weak liver. 20mg Atorvastatin daily lowered my liver func. Hence Simvastatin 10mg every alt. Day is prescribed. Is it safe for the liver?
...: You will have to continue to monitor this with routine LFTs. elevation in LFts secondary to statin therapy is usually evident in the first 3 months of therapy and is dose dependent. It is recommended to decrease dose or change med if ALT is 3 times the upper limit of normal. If that's the case, pravachol (pravastatin) may ve an option since it is primarily metabolized by the kidneys. ...Read more
My doctor prefers pravastatin 80mg over Lipitor (atorvastatin) 20mg or simvastatin 40mg. Says it is safer but can't really tell me why. Anyone agree and if so, why?
Drug interactions: Pravastatin is metabolized differently than Lipitor (atorvastatin) or simvastatin. It may reduce the risk of adverse effects caused by interactions with other medications metabolized in the liver. (lovastatin, simvastatin, or Atorvastatin are oxidized by cytochrome p450 3a4 [cyp3a4], which is inhibited by many drugs. Pravastatin or fluvastatin are not oxidized by cyp3a4). ...Read more

Which statins offer cardiac help when there is CAD with normal cholesterol that you recommend to ur patients: pravastatin, simvastatin or atorvastatin?
Diet, wt. Loss 1st,,: You've got a normal cholesterol and a condition of being overweight. Depending on the extent of your cad, it would be smart to talk to your doctor about a reasonable exercise program first. This and diet would help control the CAD without statins which have many side effects and seem to just lower cholesterol. If diet and exercise fail, then drug therapy should be carefully considered. ...Read more
When taken simvastatin induce sever headache and dr change to atrovastatin so now ok but my friend taken simvastatin and good with this. (why?)
Adverse reactions: Different people's bodies respond differently to medication. While rare, headache was a reported adverse effect of simvastatin. In most cases of minor (not in intensity, but in likelihood of true allergic response or systemic damage) adverse effects, changing to a different member in the class like your doctor did often solves the issue. ...Read more
